Now, we could have a reason why. According to a breaking report from The Wall Street Journal, the firm is axing 50-percent of its staff (leaving 80 employees) and it’s also replacing Mike Fidler, CEO, with Greg Gudorf, the company’s current president and chief operating officer. Steve Jobs had Macworld attendees salivating over the uber-thin Macbook Air on Tuesday, but once the reality distortion field went down and people actually started looking closely at the specs, that drool began to congeal. Some critics are already less than impressed by the laptop’s sealed case and the absence of features offered by other traditional notebooks, like an optical drive, replaceable battery and a firewire port. That $1800 price tag isn’t winning over many people, either. Yet such things don’t seem to worry those who make a living out of covering Apple. Every analyst we spoke to today said they expect the addition to Apple’s notebook lineup to do big things in the coming year. (Read the full post about ‘Macbook Air: The Analysts Take’…)

Posted Jan 15th 2008 5:48PM by Ryan BlockFiled under: Cellphones, Features, HDTV, Home Entertainment iPhone / iPod touch updates The iPhone 1000 SMS limit is now lifted! Huzzah! You can now “pre-type” with two thumbs on v1.1.3 now (i.e. type, type, lift thumb, lift thumb — instead of the usual type, lift, type lift, which is a big slow-down). Thanks Dan L. Gmail IMAP is now officially supported! Thanks, Niall. iPod touch can still geolocate, but using Skyhook only (since, naturally, it doesn’t have cell tower access like the iPhone + Google). Apple TV updates The update adds AirTunes support for the Apple TV for streaming directly to the device. Posted Jan 15th 2008 3:19PM by Darren MurphFiled under: Laptops, PeripheralsHaven’t spent enough on that recently pre-ordered MacBook Air just yet? Cupertino’s got just the thing: Apple’s USB Ethernet Adapter. As the title implies, this USB dongle enables your mostly wireless MBA to become a bit more wired by adding an RJ-45 that supports 10/100BASE-T. ‘Course, for $29, we’d recommend just scraping up a used WiFi router, but to each his / her own.[Via TUAW]Tags: Hi-fi, digital, gizmos, DAB (Read the full post about ‘Apple USB Ethernet Adapter brings RJ-45 to your MacBook Air’…)

![Here’s an Idea for HD DVD: Just Give Up [Format War]](http://gadgetsdevice.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/1770.jpg)
Even if you don’t take Hitler’s word for it, you probably have the feeling that Blu-ray has won, following Warner Bros.’ decision to ditch HD DVD. Questex analyst Thomas K. Arnold has a real innovative solution: “I’m hoping Toshiba, Universal and Paramount will take the high road and, for the good of the entire industry, bow out [of HD DVD]. Universal and Paramount, in particular, need to jump on the Blu-ray Disc bandwagon so we can go into the new year with a unified front and a unified mission: To educate consumers about the advantages of high-definition media and convince them the time to transition from standard DVD to Blu-ray is the day they bring that HDTV into their home.”Oh, so it’s about consumers now, eh Tom? One of the premier first-person shooters to come out for the PlayStation 3 was Resistance: Fall of Man. The title offered an adventure where World War II never happened, but instead Earth was invaded by a hostile race called the Chimera. Although it wasn’t a Halo killer, it has sold over 791,000 units, according to figures provided by NPD. With sales figures like that, it should be no surprise a sequel is in the works.
According to Game Informer Magazine, the developers at Insomniac Games are in the process of developing a sequel for Resistance: Fall of Man.

The AppleStore has been down for a long time now. As far as we can recall, it has never been down so long before a keynote, which may be a sign about what we already said last week: this keynote is going to be huge, even if the announcements could be tiny and paper-thin. While you wait for the keynote to start in our Liveblog, what do you expect to find when the store comes back up? Our poll with the most probable items is still going on: Gawker Media polls require Javascript; if you’re viewing this in an RSS reader, click through to view in your Javascript-enabled web browser.
