Review: Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 Scans And Delivers

Review: Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 Scans And Delivers
Fujitsu’s ScanSnap S300 is the cutest, most minimalist sheetfed scanner ever. It’s so perfectly tiny and well-proportioned that the snaking USB cable actually made me feel nervous and uncomfortable. Shouldn’t it use Bluetooth, or something? Catch that about the document feeder? Yes, it’s sheetfed, but doesn’t look like a 20-year old FAX machine. The scanner small, attractive, and easily portable. It’s also damn fast, slurping up a two-sided document and turning it into a PDF in about 5 seconds. Eleven inches long, 4 wide and 3 deep, it vaguely fits into a laptop bag and weighs 3.1 pounds. It can even chug along on bus power. If you do a lot of scanning and don’t need gicl√©e-print quality, the S300 is the bomb. (Read the full post about ‘Review: Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 Scans And Delivers’…)

Man Stuff - The Best of Uncrate [Roundups]

Man Stuff - The Best of Uncrate [Roundups]
This week at Uncrate: We keep track of our 2008 appointments on the Pentagram 2008 Typography Calendar, stay warm — and mobile — with the Lippi Selk Sleeping Bag, and find new appreciation for our evolutionary ancestors with Monkey Picked Tea. We also star in our own Custom Mark Weber Comic, get funky, Kama Sutra-style on the Tantra Chair, and prowl the neighborhood in a new Fisker Karma. Finally, we hope we fare better than Rob’s bro from Cloverfield in a Slusho T-Shirt, decorate our houses with some Hubcap Creatures, and attempt to blend in at the local reggae festival wearing the Oakley Medusa. Adding insult to injury: USB 3G modems won’t fit in the MacBook Air
Posted Jan 24th 2008 2:08PM by Ryan BlockFiled under: Laptops, Wireless Ouch, we just tested and confirmed that one of the smallest (and thus likeliest to fit) USB EV-DO modems around, the Sprint / Novatel U727, won’t even come close to fitting in the cramped, foldaway USB port on the MacBook Air. iPod Scroll Wheel Illumination Patent Shows Two Finger Control [Apple]

Apple’s in the midst of shoving multi-touch into every single thing they own, which means that this patent for a two-fingered iPod scroll wheel seems quite likely to come to fruition. Besides allowing you to do the “Churchill”, the patent details an illumination of the wheel as your finger passes by, possibly making a comet or a little pie shape under your pointer. Pretty neat to see what you’re doing in the dark, but ultimately just only a slight upgrade to what they already have. Mmmm, pie. [iPodNN]

Exclusive measure and whistle for daily using.

Exclusive measure and whistle for daily using.
Exclusive measure and whistle for daily using.Jan 24, 2008 Crystal Tape Measure totally shocked me. Do you think that a usual carpenter, for example, needs a crystal measure? I don’t think so. Exclusive design, bright and beautiful crystals - these are the characteristics of this measure. Moreover, you may also choose leopard gold-plated or zebra chrome-plated design. It is not useless to say that this measure costs much; you may buy about 10 usual measures. Then, I guess that these measures are not really handy. The person who will use them will be definitely afraid of losing a crystal. But if he loses the measure it will be really offensively. Now, let’s talk about the crystal whistles. Internal AT&T Memo Details Contract Free Rate Plans, Handset Must be Paid for in Full [Leaked]

Internal AT&T Memo Details Contract Free Rate Plans, Handset Must be Paid for in Full [Leaked]
One of our sources at AT&T has leaked to us an internal document; the memo details the process for obtaining a contract bundle without the obligatory 1 or 2-year commitment term. The basis for the non-commitment bundles is the customer must pay for the handset in full, losing the subsidized rate that is offered with fixed contract terms. The memo pins the start date of the non-commitment bundles as November 2007, but we have heard no word on any such contractual freedom previously. The money quote from the leaked document is in the overview, which reads:Great News! The No-Commitment option is now available for customers on all rate plans (postpaid) in OPUS and PDC. This means that customers no lo (Read the full post about ‘Internal AT&T Memo Details Contract Free Rate Plans, Handset Must be Paid for in Full [Leaked]’…)

Sprint layoffs start at the top

Sprint layoffs start at the top
Posted Jan 24th 2008 9:39AM by Evan BlassFiled under: CellphonesWell, not the very top — give the guy a chance, will ya! — but it’s clear that heads are already starting to roll at Sprint Nextel following last week’s disastrous report of subscriber churn, with the company’s chief financial officer, chief marketing officer, and president of sales and distribution effectively getting the boot as of tomorrow. In respective order, Paul Saleh, Tim Kelly, and Mark Angelino will all be “stepping down” on Friday, according to the Wall Street Journal (subscription required) — the first casualties of a planned 4,000 head count reduction. AQUOS X Is World’s Thinnest Production TV, Says Sharp [LCD]

AQUOS X Is World’s Thinnest Production TV, Says Sharp [LCD]
The new Sharp AQUOS X series are only 1.35 inches deep, which is thinner than their old IFA bags and, according to Sharp, makes them the world’s thinnest LCD televisions in production. All of them have full high definition resolution at 37, 42 and 47 inches. What is Sharp thinning trick this time? Among other things, all the tuner and in/out connections are in a separate box, which is connected to the panel by a single cable (Ed: like my old Philips Flat TV.) The rest of the specs look very good. galleryPost(’aquosx’, 3,’AquosX’); Sharp claims a 15,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (900:1 absolute) for these LCDs, and a 450 cd/m2 brightness with double-speed 120 Hz refresh rate and 176 degree viewing angle.
