ABBA CL-168 Water-powered Calculator

ABBA CL-168 Water-powered Calculator
ABBA (not the Swedish band) has just released its CL-168, a water-powered calculator that does away with the need for batteries or fuel. It comes with an 8-digit display and an ergonomic design. I wonder, assuming water could be harnessed to light up the display, it would do much better than any solar-powered calculator to date. No idea on how much this costs though. Acer gobbles up 75% of Packard Bell

Acer gobbles up 75% of Packard Bell
Posted Jan 31st 2008 11:10AM by Paul MillerFiled under: Desktops, Laptops Just like expected, Acer has formally bought into Packard Bell, snapping up 75% of PB Holdings, Packard Bell’s parent company. Things got a bit hairy for a bit there when Packard Bell started speaking with Lenovo as well, since Acer fears losing its strength in Europe to the Chinese giant. Luckily for Acer, Gateway was the real clincher here, since Gateway started talks with Packard Bell before getting bought by Acer itself, and had nabbed the right to counter any offers Packard Bell might get from other companies. Mobile office sphere

Mobile office sphere
In case you like travelling and have a laptop you will probably agree that sitting with the laptop on your knees can not be regarded as a comfortable pastime. But sometimes it’s really impossible to find a convenient place for using your laptop. Maybe there is something that should be invented to make this process easier? Michiel van der Kley who has been producing designs since 1987 has just the same opinion. That’s why he decided to design Globus concept that shows his creativity and imagination. Globus represents a multi-functional mobile office that looks like a sphere. When the gadget is closed its strange design can attract the most curious of spectators, but in case it’s opened people will understand its function at once. Asus announces E-TV, E-DT, E-Monitor

Asus announces E-TV, E-DT, E-Monitor
Asus will be adding to the lineup of Eee products, no longer will it just be limited to the much talked about ultra-portable Eee PC laptop. Asus will begin offering LCD TV’s, a desktop PC and all-in-one style computer similar to the iMac and XPS One. The LCD TV line is going to enter the larger than 42-inch market and is expected to retail for no higher than $200 more than competing brands. They will “integrate the Linux-based PC functionality of other Eee PC products,” and are looking for a September launch. The desktop PC will be the E-DT and will initially feature an Intel Celeron processor with later models to use Intel’s Shelton’08 platform with Diamondville processors and the 945GC chipset. Soft Light concept

Soft Light concept

Those of us who do our fair bit of reading will know that having light reflect off paper can be quite annoying. The Soft Light concept offers the reader with a luminescence which can be positioned according to the user’s needs. In addition, it can function as both an indoor or outdoor lighting, offering unprecedented flexibility to the user. The slim and flexible body allows a person to adjust its “neck” accordingly for optimal lighting. As for the lamp holder, it functions as a charger that helps juice up the lamp for outdoor use. Anyone wants to see this concept realized? (Read the full post about ‘Soft Light concept’…)

700MHz auction exceeds $10 Billion, open-access just one bid away

700MHz auction exceeds $10 Billion, open-access just one bid away
Posted Jan 31st 2008 7:00AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: WirelessWith weeks still to go, your dysfunctional Uncle Sam is briskly rubbing his hands at having raised more than $10 Billion from the 700MHz auction. This, after just 16 rounds of bidding. But we’re not happy to say the least. The all powerful, all propagating 700MHz “C” Block continues to stagnate at a bid of $4.3B — unchanged since round 13. Perhaps the other contestants are waiting to see if Google carries through with their $4.6B pledge to trigger the open-access rule. Round 17 begins in just 3 hours and requires a minimum bid of $4,713,823,000. (Read the full post about ‘700MHz auction exceeds $10 Billion, open-access just one bid away’…)

Hands-on with the Pentax K200D DSLR

Hands-on with the Pentax K200D DSLR
Posted Jan 31st 2008 1:35AM by Steven KimFiled under: Digital Cameras Pretty much all the major camera manufacturers had their wares on display tonight at Digital Focus, the pregame event to PMA. We got our hands on Pentax’s prosumer DSLR, the K200D. Pentax definitely makes a competitive case for itself here — lots of buyers just getting into a DSLR don’t have “investments” into glass from other vendors, and the features on the K200D look great: 10.2-megapixel CCD, 2.7-inch LCD, Shake Reduction in the body, and dust/weather resistant seals.
