GPS: One More Reason to Break Into Your Car

GPS: One More Reason to Break Into Your Car
NPR reminds us that GPS units, which were a surprisingly big item for Christmas giving, also present an attractive target to smash-and-grabbers. John Roman, a criminal justice researcher with the Urban Institute, says navigation units are the hot new alternative to car stereos for lowlifes looking for quick cash:[Thieves] probably have to steal six car radios to get the return from stealing a GPS…So for them, it’s worth finding one.Coming soon, maybe: GPS units that share location info with designated parties, allowing the unlucky or careless to track a stolen unit. 3G + N95 + JoikuSpot + WiFi + iPhone = 3G iPhone (the hard way)

3G + N95 + JoikuSpot + WiFi + iPhone = 3G iPhone (the hard way)
Posted Feb 6th 2008 7:06AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Cellphones, WirelessIn the unlikeliest of unions since Julia and Lyle, we bring you some hot iPhone on N95 symbiotic action. Using the free JoikuSpot application released this morning, you can now turn any S60 smartphone into a WiFi hotspot. Yes, just like WMWifiRouter does for WinMo devices. Sure, the solution doesn’t make much sense from locations with tethered Internet and you can’t encrypt the http and https (only) traffic. But if you’ve ever been in a WiFi dead spot and needed to share access (think PSP gaming), this type of solution is pretty unbeatable. Assuming you have an unlimited data plan that is. Click the read link for the video. (Read the full post about ‘3G + N95 + JoikuSpot + WiFi + iPhone = 3G iPhone (the hard way)’…)

Watercooled Radeon 3870

Watercooled Radeon 3870
Sapphire has released its new Atomic Radeon 3870 that is watercooled, helping keep the mercury low while you’re busy fragging away on your PC in the latest DirectX 10 game. It comes with a standard dual-chip Radeon that features a massive waterblock that covers the card, providing efficient cooling with a fair bit of overclocking headroom. The kit also ships with a combination pump/radiator and a small cable which hooks up the board to the main unit, which is probably there to monitor the temperature. No idea on the final clock speed and pricing, but it ought to hit retail stores once the Chinese Lunar New Year festival is over. (Read the full post about ‘Watercooled Radeon 3870′…)

Seoul Blanketed With WiBro

Seoul Blanketed With WiBro
Koreans are a very blessed bunch - especially those who live in Seoul. This mega city is the beneficiary of a city-wide WiBro blanket, making it possible for users to remain online despite zooming down the freeway at 100 kmh. It features an average download speed of 3Mbps, making it superior to HSDPA’s average of 1Mbps. Unfortunately, you won’t see WiBro making its way around the world too soon as many parts of the globe are rolling out 3G services, presumably because they don’t have the necessary infrastructure and find the entry cost of WiBro too high. This is nothing but good news for tech geeks who must remain connected 24/7 at decent speeds. (Read the full post about ‘Seoul Blanketed With WiBro’…)

Sony Ericsson J110 Cell Phone

Sony Ericsson J110 Cell Phone
Sony Ericsson will be introducing its J110 cell phone at 3GSM, and this candybar handset clearly targets the entry level market. Don’t expect fancy stuff like 3G connectivity and the ilk - even the screen size looks small enough for the most basic of functions. The J110 is basically a ‘Talk & Text’ phone, capable of storing up to 200 numbers as well as a hundred text messages. You get 8 hours of talk time per battery charge, which is pretty lengthy. Tankpitstop Robotic Arm

Tankpitstop Robotic Arm
While many gas stations have long introduced the self-service model, folks in the Netherlands could soon need not lift a finger to keep their vehicles refueled thanks to the Tankpitstop robotic arm. This unique invention relies on its array of sensors and a car database in order to hone in and open a car’s gas flap, do the needful and fill up the vehicle. Unfortunately, the implementation cost is extremely high as each Tankpitstop robotic arm retails for $111,100.
