Looks like Sony Ericsson will be making the leap onto the Windows Mobile bandwagon as announced at the MWC 2008 in Barcelona, with the XPERIA X1 holding that honor. The X1 will merge both mobile Web communication as well as multimedia entertainment in a single package so that consumer demand for a premium mobile experience for work and play can be met. According to Pieter Knook, senior vice president, Mobile Communications Business, Microsoft, “People should be able to have phones that deliver what they need throughout the day and stay connected with today’s broad array of on-demand information and entertainment no matter where they are. There isn’t a gadget or electronics fanatic out there that isn’t giddy the first time they watch their brand new hi-definition television watching hi-def content. Watching Planet Earth, nature shows on the Discovery Channel, and so on. But there comes that second moment of hi-def ownership, the one that happens after you watch your local news in hi-def or when you see one of those reality TV shows in hi-def. The moment where you see someone’s face in hi-def that should have really stayed in standard def. You know that old adage “a face made for radio”? I think there’ll be a new one for this era of hi-def: a face made for standard def.” From an unlikely source comes a possible solution for that. In our last poll, we asked you how long you can do without your cell phone. Here are the results: I was a little surprised that so many people said they could leave behind their cell phones for an entire week. Among the “other” answers were: one month, one minute, never, and forever. I would put myself in the 15-minutes category, but only when my daughter is at home. Otherwise, maybe 5 minutes. Our new poll asks about your ideal Valentine’s Day gift. Take it here. Tags: pvp, consumer technology, cable, digital (Read the full post about ‘Popgadget polls’…)

Posted Feb 11th 2008 11:19AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Digital Cameras, Displays Oh yeah, we’ve seen multi-purpose digiframes before, but Mustek’s latest manages to handle five whole tasks only marginally well. You heard right — this minuscule device packs a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 panel for showing wallet-sized digital images along with an alarm clock, FM radio, built-in MP3 player and a thermometer. You’ll also find an MMC / SD expansion slot for loading up those precious memories, a USB 2.0 connector and a pair of skull-crushing one-watt speakers to boot. Some kinds of documents and things must be locked away from unauthorized access. For centuries, people use locks and safes to guard their important belongings. However, those bulky safes are so old fashioned nowadays! The keys can be stolen or lost, password - revealed or forgotten. Truly modern safes are based on personal identification that cannot be lost or replicated. One of these methods is fingerprint identification - one of the most commonly used biometric identification nowadays. Fingerprints are very hard or almost impossible to replicate, and there is no need to worry about losing key or forgetting password - while your fingers are with you, you will always be able to open that safe. Posted Feb 11th 2008 11:51AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Cellphones Maybe it’s just us, but the image pictured above sure looks a helluva lot sexier than the blurry depiction we saw of Samsung’s G810 just last week. Along with just about everyone else in the mobile world, Samsung is making its striking do-it-all slider official at Mobile World Congress, and it’s packin’ quite the specs list. We’re talking HSDPA, a 5-megapixel camera with face detection, Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) and image stabilization, a 2.6-inch QVGA display, built-in GPS / WiFi, a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack and a 12.9-millimeter-thick frame. All that’s for sure is a March 2008 release for those in Europe, but word on the stree (Read the full post about ‘Samsung’s HSDPA-equipped G810 slider gets official’…)

Bluetooth technology could be speeded up next year by taking advantage of WiFi connectivity that already come with many gadgets these days. According to Michael Foley, director of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, “the first devices with the technology could be on the market in the middle of next year. The industry group behind Bluetooth, which has more than 10,000 member companies, plans to announce Monday that it is pursuing the technology and will make it available next year.” We will probably see single chips that merge both Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity in the future instead of running both functions in separate chips today. I don’t know about you, but I’m all for faster connectivity. (Read the full post about ‘Bluetooth Piggybacks On WiFi’…)
