Posted Feb 13th 2008 1:55PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Misc. gadgets, Household It looks like coffee technology could be about to take another leap forward, with Nestle researchers now touting that they’ve devised a machine that can tell the difference between good coffee and bad coffee — espresso, in particular. Apparently, the machine has “nearly” the taste accuracy of a panel of trained espresso tasters, who, if this machine is any indication, may soon have to kiss their envious job goodbye (like so many others that have been forced to confront the cold hard reality of the machines taking over). For those who carry a pocket version of Microsoft Office, the Samsung MBP-100 will definitely be their best friend. This unique pocket projector device is meant to work with a smartphone so that business presentations can be carried out virtually anywhere without having to rely on a laptop, PowerPoint and searching for a few power outlets in the vicinity. The MBP-100 is good enough to cast a 20″ display from an attached cell phone and can project a 10 ANSI lumen beam which is good enough to work in daylight without ruining your eyesight. There is no word on pricing as at press time, but I think this will be a big thing when commercially available - hopefully Samsung engineers get the cooling system and battery life all worked out prior to releasing it. I like the concept of a collapsible surfboard. If you could get the size down to a size that it might fit in a backpack (albeit a large backpack) you are on to something. This collapsible surfboard is just in concept stages for now. It is constructed from carbon-fiber which ought to make it light but expensive. It has hot-swappable fins and looks very slick. It looks like everything fits flush, so there should not be too much extra drag from the joins. The only major drawback I would see is the possibility of breakage in heavy surf. I’ve tried a number of different iPhone cases, and when I first saw the The Titan Clear case from GizMac, it didn’t shout out at me in any way. I’d seen lots of clear cases before, and this one didn’t look that different to me from the box. But when I put it on my iphone, I immediately saw that this simple clear case has a number of elegant features. It has a built-in stand that folds out in two ways, but because they’re flush with the back of the case, it doesn’t add any additional bulk. You can also get it with a removable holster (which is something I’ve never used, so it’s good that it’s optional). The plastic also seems less flimsy than other clear cases I’ve tried, it just feels very solid. (Read the full post about ‘Titan Clear case for iPhone’…)

This is an interesting idea: Thanko has a “universal” charger that should work on any battery that has the contacts placed like the one in the photo. On the charger-side, the contact points can be moved to fit most batteries. Light indicators will tell you where the charging is at. Available in Japan only for $18. While official details have not been announced on the Danger acquisition, Om Malik is speculating that Microsoft paid $500 million. Further speculation is that early investors got modest returns on the sale, but the later stage investors made out “like bandits.” Om Malik is also noted as saying: The deal’s big sticker price is intriguing — leading me to believe that Microsoft wants to pull an Xbox on its mobile phone business. Could this mean Microsoft is preparing to offer up some real competition with Android? I tend to have a fancy phone, mostly because I do a lot of work on the road, and thus need all of the extra features I can get. Naturally, my phone has a microSD slot for storing music, pictures, video and other data. The only issue I have with using it is that I also have to carry around my microSD to SD card adapter, which is just one more thing to hassle with. However, this little USB drive from Kingston might just be what I need. The Data Traveler Micro Reader looks just like any ordinary flash drive, but there’s more than meets the eye. On the top of the unit there is actually a small hatch that opens up to reveal a card reader for microSD and Memory Stick Micro cards. I’ve seen lots of food on sticks at county fairs and Renaissance festivals, including corn dogs, steaks, frozen cheesecake (did they eat cheesecake during the Renaissance?), and kebabs of all varieties, but never have I wished to prepare food on a stick in the comfort of my own kitchen. And of all the food combinations I’ve thought of, a hot dog on a waffle has never occurred to me (though I have seen fried chicken on waffles, something that still boggles my mind). But now that I’ve seen this little appliance for making hot dogs surrounded by waffle on a stick (or crepe dogs, more traditional corn dogs, or just about anything that will cook on a grill and hold itself on a stick), I want to have a “food on a stick” party.
