Given the HD-DVD debacle, it’s not surprising that Samsung will reduce its support for HD-DVD in the near future, even though the company was somewhat biased towards Blu-Ray. While scaling back HD-DVD might sound like a lot of work, it actually isn’t. Samsung has been building dual-format drives for some time, and removing the HD-DVD optical components is extremely easy. Of course, the good news is that mono-format drive prices will go down faster. You’ve heard it for years: “one-click backup”. Clickfree points out that many competing offering ask users to do complex setups and software installation. That is somewhat true, although I would argue that the complex setup is mainly aimed at saving storage space. Clickfree doesn’t require any software installation, and will start saving files as soon as it is connected. It on Windows at the moment and the only obvious downside that I can see is its storage capacity: 120GB. That sounds certainly low for a backup device. If you want to “save everything”, take a look at Acronis Trueimage. Tags: gadgetry, dvr, speaker, camera (Read the full post about ‘ClickFree Claims Real One-Click Backup’…)

Posted Feb 18th 2008 10:59AM by Paul MillerFiled under: Gaming We spotted this Guitar Hero clone while strolling the floors of Toy Fair 2008. It’s hard to really get up in arms about “Guitar Fever” swiping intellectual property with Rock Band all copping Guitar Hero’s style, and it’s great that you can pick up one of these for $50 and plug it straight into your TV with no console required. Posted Feb 18th 2008 8:16AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: HDTVToshiba made a formal announcement today with regard to the state of HD DVD. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the white-flag surrender we had hoped would bring a swift end to the format war. In a statement made by a Toshiba spokesman, the firm said, “Toshiba has not made any announcement or decision. We are currently assessing our business strategies, but nothing has been decided at the moment.” This came as its stock soared under investor speculation that Toshiba was ready to pre-empt future losses and bring the battle with Blu-ray to a conclusive end. Nevertheless, a multi-format disc pressing plant for indie films by the name of Blue Ray Technologies (BRT) announced the closure of its hd dvd stamping lines. With Toshiba’s shares surging on reports that it is about to kill HD-DVD off, the invisible fist makes its position clear: Get it over with.
Toshiba rose 6 percent this morning on reports that it was about to bury the high-definition disk format, axed last week by Wal-Mart and Netflix. Investors are happy to see the company uncouple itself from the technology.

Montevina, the forthcoming successor to Intel’s Santa Rosa chipset, will be the last to be branded with the august "Centrino" label, according to a report in Taiwan’s DigiTimes. It will be known to consumers as Centrino 2!"Intel is set to launch the Centrino 2 platform in Computex Taipei 2008 along with six 45nm notebook CPUs, all with a 1066MHz FSB. Core speeds will range between 2.26-3.06GHz and prices between US$209-851 in 1000-unit tray quantities."Maybe Capcom could one day be put in charge of chip branding, so that we may be further confused by Centrino 2 Duo EX 2 Alpha III. Posted Feb 18th 2008 3:47AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Portable Video PacketVideo has a new receiver which can pump mobile TV over good ol’ WiFi. PV claims the device will ultimately ship before the year is out in versions supporting over-the-air DVB-H and MediaFLO broadcasting as well as TDtv and WiMAX streaming. Although it’s presumably compatible with any WiFi device, they specifically cite support for the the iphone, N-Series Nokias and HTC devices while demonstrating the device with an ipod touch at Mobile World Congress. The 6.4 x 1.8 x 4-cm block is powered by a lithium-ion battery of unspecified capabilities. Although it’s not stated, we assume the received television can be shared with multiple devices over that wi (Read the full post about ‘PacketVideo brings Mobile TV to any WiFi device’…)
