Duke University: home to world’s largest 802.11n wireless network
Posted Feb 19th 2008 2:06PM by Darren MurphFiled under: Wireless, Networking We know, most of you Blue Devil fans are still reeling from that recent loss to Wake Forest, but if it’s any consolation, at least your campus is about to become home to the “world’s largest” 802.11n wireless network. Last we heard, The Ohio State University held the crown for Earth’s biggest WLAN with 1,700 access points lit, but according to Cisco, Duke’s campus will soon house 2,500 Aironet 1250 Series APs. Bye Bye Standby

Bye Bye Standby
Don’t think that you’re doing the environment a whole world of good by putting your devices in standby mode - they still add up to a fair bit in your monthly electrical bill. Bye Bye Standby aims to eliminate that, featuring a motion sensor within that enables you to turn devices off simply by walking out of the room. The included key fob allows you to completely turn appliances off within a 30 meter radius - perfect when you’ve left your house wondering whether everything is no longer a fire hazard. The full range of Bye Bye Standby products are available after the jump. (Read the full post about ‘Bye Bye Standby’…)

Gates: War with Google continues even without Yahoo!

Gates: War with Google continues even without Yahoo!
Though Yahoo rejected its “undervalued” bid, Microsoft’s part-time chairman Bill Gates said the show must go on and the software giant will continue to invest heavily on Web search to snatch sizeable share away from Google. Gates boasts Microsoft has enough resources to invest in engineering and marketing. However, he also admitted that Yahoo’s superior engineering technology and manpower will help fast track development. But the whole Microhoo deal may not be over yet. Many analysts expect Microsoft to sweeten the deal and open negotiations with a bid of $35 per share. Although Gates reiterated that the offer was “full and fair”, he did not elaborate further on the next steps of this acquisition talks. HP 2133 Is What We Really Wanted The MacBook Air To Be

HP 2133 Is What We Really Wanted The MacBook Air To Be
HP Compaq’s 2133 subnotebook PC exists only as a small collection images, leaked onto the internet like a ciscernful of scare quotes. The 2133 is alleged to have an 8.9" display with a 1,366×766 resolution, an  ExpressCard/54 slot, webcam and optional flash storage. The keyboard is 95 percent of full-size, and the casing itself made of aluminum, giving it a 2.5lb heft. Gigabit ethernet and WiFi supply connection options: no WWAN is indicated, the only thing I can find wrong with it other than the fact it will not run OSX. There appears to be a DVI port on the left hand side, with one USB (or maybe  RJ-11/modem) and audio jacks. (Read the full post about ‘HP 2133 Is What We Really Wanted The MacBook Air To Be’…)

Gadgetell Unboxing: AT&T glacier white Palm Centro

Gadgetell Unboxing: AT&T glacier white Palm Centro
The Gadgetell team was lucky enough to get our hands on an early release of the new AT&T branded Palm Centro and while many of the features of the Centro remain the same as other carriers, the glacier white is stunning. We do have to admit that when the box first opened and those green keys hit our eyes we were a little scared, but they quickly grow on you. With all the recent hype, leaks, early releases this one was hard to keep to ourselves, but now it has been officially announced and we can share the pictures. Keep reading for a full unboxing along with some comparison pictures between the Palm Centro, blackberry Pearl and Apple iphone. New ergonomic mouse - Wow-Pen Joy

New ergonomic mouse - Wow-Pen Joy
This new ergonomic mouse, called the “Wow-Pen Joy” (which Gizmodo says possesses no wow, no pen, and no joy) is set to be released in North American and Sweden next month, by Korean company WOW Technology, makers of digital pens and ergonomic mice (including a pen-type mouse, which I suppose is the origin of the name). Aesthetics aside, I can see where the shark fin shape of the mouse would be a more natural fit for the hand, as well as the upright position which doesn’t force you to twist your wrist downward as with traditional mice. For $30, I’d be willing to give it a try. Via AVING.net. (Read the full post about ‘New ergonomic mouse - Wow-Pen Joy’…)

USB Vacuum Mouse

USB Vacuum Mouse
Thanko is at it again - this time with a USB Vacuum mouse. Since there is no data transfer, the Vacuum mouse is still stuck in the USB 1.1 era, featuring an 800dpi sensor while looking like any other standard three button mouse at a retail store near you. There is a small switch on the side that turns on the vacuum cleaner though - perfect for folks who subsist on a diet of pizza and crackers at their desk all day long and don’t want to trouble the office cleaning lady. I wonder if it can vacuum keyboards as well… Tags: lcd, hi fi, design, cable (Read the full post about ‘USB Vacuum Mouse’…)

Disabled spy satellite photographed over Japan

Disabled spy satellite photographed over Japan
Posted Feb 19th 2008 5:07AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Misc. gadgets var Looks like we’ll be able to watch first hand as the US attempts to blast its failed spy satellite from the heavens on Thursday as rumored. That’s the first picture of the tumbling spacecraft as taken from the Kumamoto observatory in Japan. That picture was taken with a 20 second exposure but it may still be visible with the naked eye. A certainty if that thousand-pound, hydrazine fuel tank lands in your backyard.[Thanks, Kaztm]Tags: M4A, cable, Ogg, home theater (Read the full post about ‘Disabled spy satellite photographed over Japan’…)

Apple store down, again

Apple store down, again
Posted Feb 19th 2008 6:50AM by Thomas RickerSigh. You know the drill. A couple hours of downtime and then we’ll see nothing (maintenance), or new products that range from the mundane (Aperture 2) to the golly (32GB ipod touch). We already saw the iPod shuffle drop by $30 this morning before Apple pulled the plug on the store. Perhaps the $100 drops on the iphone and touch are just minutes away? It is Tuesday after all.Tags: PDA, gprs, pvr, DAB (Read the full post about ‘Apple store down, again’…)

NEC gifts LaVie J laptop lineup with wireless USB
Posted Feb 19th 2008 10:09AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Laptops, Wireless We’re a bit bummed that wireless USB-equipped laptops are merely trickling in versus pouring, but we reckon we’ll take what we can get. Next on the docket is the LaVie J series from NEC, which consists of the flagship LJ750/LH along with the lower-end LJ730/LG and LJ700/LH. Besides the whole cord free USB thing, you’ll also find up to a 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo U6700, 2GB of RAM, a 12.1-inch display (1,280 x 800 resolution), 160GB of HDD space, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR.
