Posted Feb 19th 2008 10:10PM by Darren MurphFiled under: HDTV, Home Entertainment The writing was already on the wall, but it looks as if Onkyo actually won’t be pursuing the long lost hd dvd format any longer. According to a Japanese report at Yomiuri Online, the firm will be discontinuing production of HD DVD players following Toshiba’s own decision to abandon the format, but it will continue to provide service for customers that already snapped up the DV-HD805. Interestingly, there was no mention of Onkyo’s plans in regard to Blu-ray, but nevertheless, yet another red supporter has definitely waved its white flag. Posted Feb 20th 2008 4:44AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Portable Audio If your primary motivation in choosing an mp3 player is its ability to match your shoes then you’re in luck, sissy. Sony’s newest NW-E-series of Walkman USB sticks come in ¥16,000 (about $149) NW-E026F (4GB), ¥13,000 ($121) NW-E025F (2GB), and ¥11,000 ($102) the NW-E023F (1GB) flavors with plenty of interchangeable shells to keep up with your wardrobe. They support ATRAC/MP3/WMA/AAC and Linear PCM with an FM tuner thrown in for good measure. But hey, nobody as hip as you listens to FM now do they? Look for these to go global with the addition of DRM’d WMA but without Sony’s proprietary ATRAC format sometime after the Japanese launch on March 8th. Not that you’ve noticed… but all fine restaurants on Tatooine feature R2-D2 pepper grinders. Usually after you order your salad of Dagobah greens a Wookie will come around and offer you some fresh ground pepper from one of these handy droid-based mills. Word to the wise… never refuse a Wookie. Fortunately for you we’ve managed to pilfer a few hundred R2-D2 pepper mills from eateries all over Tatooine for your spice grinding pleasure. Simply twist R2’s head and he deposits pepper onto your food. Hey, it’s not a glamorous job for a droid… but much better than being abducted by Jawas. Gimmie! Suggested Price: $19.99 Tags: dap, home cinema, gadgetry, hdtv (Read the full post about ‘Star Wars R2-D2 Peppermill’…)

A few months back I gave Toshiba some advice on how HD-DVD could win the format war. Perhaps it was too little, too late, or it was sound advice that fell on deaf ears. Either way, Toshiba has packed up camp and announced it will no longer be manufacturing or marketing HD-DVD players and ending the long format war once and for all.
It’s estimated Toshiba sold over one million HD-DVD players and three-hundred thousand personal computers with HD-DVD drives. Painful as it may be for early adopters, there will be no rebates, refunds, or credits toward Blu-Ray devices for anyone that bought in to HD-DVD early.
What brought the demise of HD-DVD?

If you’re curious and have a little bit of money to burn, why not take advantage of the HD DVD fire sale that is currently happening? Circuit City is selling the Toshiba HD-A3 for a mere $99 (including shipping), and they’re kind enough to throw in 7 free movies. That’s quite the bargain, and you get to give the look and sound of perfect a last hurrah. I’m interested to know at what price point are you willing to pick up an hd dvd player? Anyways, the HD-A3 would make a great DVD player as well since it can upconvert standard-def DVDs to grace your spanking new HDTV. I also wonder when will the day arrive where Blu-ray players dip below the $100 mark. (Read the full post about ‘HD DVD Fire Sales’…)
