Philips brings toasters to the 21st century

Philips brings toasters to the 21st century

Toast has to be one of the most simplistic pieces of food to make that actually requires preparation. Just pull out the bread, pop it in the toaster, pull down the lever and it does the rest. The toaster itself is rather simple, you have metal brackets that hold down the toast and wires along the sides that heat up your bread. However, that just seems too simple for Philips, who has created a more modern toaster. The new 1200W HD2618 just sounds complicated. It features a digital countdown timer, so you know exactly when your crunchy bread is going to pop up, selections for one or two-sided toasting and power of up to 1200 watts. iriver E100 hits Europe

iriver E100 hits Europe
Posted Feb 29th 2008 8:48AM by Paul MillerFiled under: Portable Audio, Portable Video iriver unveiled a whole bunch of hotness at this year’s CES, so you’ll have to pick your next player from them wisely… lest you end up buying the whole lot. That said, we’re not sure the E100 would be our first choice, but it’s certainly no slouch in the looks or specs departments, and it’s hitting the market well before most of those fancier players. There’s a 2.4-inch QVGA display, built-in stereo speakers and a microSD slot to supplement the included memory. Audio codec support includes FLAC, MP3, WMA, ASF and OGG, while you can manage MPEG-4, WMV9 and XVID for video. There’s also a mic, FM radio and line-in for acquiring audio. Sony Turntable Rips And Scratches Vinyl

Sony Turntable Rips And Scratches Vinyl
With CD sales dropping and vinyl seeing a resurgence, the future may bring a world where vinyl is once again king of physical media. Until that day, groove-junkies can enjoy the best of vinyl and digital with Sony’s new USB turntable. It has a built in pre-amp, so you can play records directly into the line socket of a modern amplifier, and will also digitize music on the fly and deliver it to your PC via USB.You’ll still need to chop out the individual tracks and hand-roll the MP3s, but it’s vinyl, right? You guys are used to all that manual turning of disks and dropping of needles. You’ll enjoy it. (Read the full post about ‘Sony Turntable Rips And Scratches Vinyl’…)

Sintex’s biogas digester ingests crap, emits energy

Sintex’s biogas digester ingests crap, emits energy
Posted Feb 29th 2008 6:27AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Misc. gadgetsSintex Industries’ aptly-dubbed biogas digester is most certainly not the first of its kind, but it is somewhat commendable that its maker is making no bones about this thing’s purpose. Destined to “solve India’s energy and sanitation problems in one stroke,” this concoction can convert “human [waste], cow dung, or kitchen garbage into fuel that can be used for cooking or generating electricity.” Reportedly, a one-cubic-meter digester would sell for around $425, but could pay for itself in energy savings in under 24 months. Homeless Folk Get Free Voicemail

Homeless Folk Get Free Voicemail
Google is doing something for the homeless community of San Francisco by offering free voicemail - every single homeless person in the city will receive a life-long phone number and voicemail if they decide to take up Google’s offer. This is meant for homeless individuals to get back on their feet by distributing numbers to shelters and job agencies which could help them secure a job as they will then be contactable. I guess this is way more economical compared to providing folk with a laptop and a free GMail account. The program is more than ready to roll out - good on you, Google! Laptop Controlled Drifter

Laptop Controlled Drifter

This RC car is a laptop controlled drifter project created by Chris over at PyroElectro. The aim of the project was to make an ordinary RC car have the ability to be controlled by a laptop. By using the laptop and a small box attached to a COM port, full control of the car is made possible and of course, automated control is also available too. By using Windows scripting, commands can be sent to the remote control device at the end of the COM port which in turn, sends those signals to the RC car. The car it’s self is untouched and standard. The script is fairly straight forwards and is just a set of commands that you send to the PIC (micro controller) with some free software available for download over at PyroElectro. Built-in Coffee Appliance

Built-in Coffee Appliance
Looks like Brewmatic has unveiled a new design for its coffee maker that is built-into your kitchen cabinet, featuring electronic controls with a programmable digital clock and time with Auto-On function, enabling you to wake up to a freshly brewed pot of coffee first thing in the morning. All this is possible only if you remember to set it up properly before you retire to bed. There are several brew volume options available, including Full Brew, Half Brew and Quarter Brew. I like the way this thing was designed as it definitely helps in saving shelf space which could be used to do/place other stuff. We all know how women love to have a large kitchen. Minimal Dual Digital Analog Alarm Clock

Minimal Dual Digital Analog Alarm Clock
Now this is a pretty looking alarm clock concept that will sit well on your bedside table - the Minimal Dual Digital Analog Alarm Clock. Created by Daniel Jarr, it might lack all the modern trappings such as weather updates as well as traffic information, but at least you can always refer to either the analog or digital displays, depending on your preference. There is also a reason for this nifty concept’s pivoting nature - push down the right side will set the alarm while pushing the left side functions as a snooze. Pushing down the analog clock’s frame provides a light as well. I wonder what happens if you rock the clock back and forth… (Read the full post about ‘Minimal Dual Digital Analog Alarm Clock’…)
