Asus has introduced a new series of concept computers with outer casings that are supposedly to be made out of bamboo (yes, the plant). If this is ever implemented, I think Asus will be in a win-win situation. Bamboo, of course, is environmentally friendly, very cost efficient, proven to be stronger than steel (in the sense of durability, strength, toughness, flexibility, etc.) and there is already a large quantity available from farms throughout the world. That’s not even mentioning the fact that some of its shoots are edible, and that these shoots are extremely healthy. The only disadvantage that comes to mind with this concept is… nothing, actually. Does your camera scream "I have a cool new digicam! Go ahead and mug me!"? If not, it’s time to get your bid in for one of the new limited-edition models of the Olympus Stylus 1020 (10 megapixels, 7x zoom). Each camera comes with a colorful skin designed by Hungarian artist Matei Apostolescu. I’d say the results are quite pleasing in a retro, Peter Max-y kind of way, but what do I know about art? Olympus will only sell 5,000 of them, price and availability TBA. The unadorned version of the 1020 sells for $350. (Read the full post about ‘Olympus Goes Mod With Limited-Edition Digicam’…)

Under normal circumstances a Q&A session with a tech CEO is a fairly bland event. Sure sometime you get a Ballmer-esque monkey-boy moment, but usually it’s an opportunity for the CEO to break some news and to get out without looking clueless. This week though we are reminded why a room full of tech-savvy web developers is a very different crowd. Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook was to appear in what was billed as a keynote but ultimately was a sit down Q&A with Business week reporter Sarah Lacy. Lacy and Zuckerberg have a history together in that she has written a book about Web 2.0 and this newest wave of internet movers and shakers that Zuckerberg is currently riding. So you’re too poor to purchase a paper shredder from Office Depot, and your pet hamster looks out of sorts lately after doing nothing but lazing around his cage all day long. What are you to do? Just cobble together this paper shredder into his cage, and you’ve got one of the greenest paper shredders in the world. Unfortunately, the service rendered here is not on-demand since you gotta coax the little fellow do go on the treadmill before any actual shredding gets done. Best of all is, the shreds of paper can be turned into his bedding, although I wouldn’t recommend shredding too many sheets at one time as you might just bury the poor fellow under an avalance of paper. We have all heard of point-and-click, and here’s a thermometer that takes a somewhat similar route - the Thermofocus 5-in-1 Infrared Thermometer. This device is capable to capture one’s body temperature accurately without having to come into skin-to-skin contact - as long as you aim the light directly at the forehead. Perfect for parents who want to monitor their new addition’s temperature while he/she is sleeping without stirring him/her out from sleep. I like non-invasive devices - why can’t aliens use something like this instead of their inhumane probes in their experiments on humans? The Thermofocus 5-in-1 Infrared Thermometer will retail for $68. (Read the full post about ‘Thermofocus 5-in-1 Infrared Thermometer’…)

Posted Mar 12th 2008 4:17AM by Thomas Ricker It’s certainly not the first digital camera to sport MP3 playback. Still, the 7 megapixel Picto DigiArt i90 manages that trick with a certain style not to be overlooked. The 17.5-mm thick shell hosts a 3x optical zoom lens, 3.0-inch LCD, face recognition, unspecified anti-shake technology, voice recorder, 740 x 480 / 30fps MPEG-4 video recorder, and the ability to playback MP3s and video of unspecified formats. Available in Korea this month for ₩179,000 (about $185) with 1GB of SD storage included. Not bad for a take-anywhere, all-purpose shooter sure to best your cameraphone in quality and versatility.
