Intel to Ship 160GB SSDs This Year

Intel to Ship 160GB SSDs This Year
Intel plans to ship 160GB solid state drives in the second quarter of this year. The flash drives will use the SATA II interface, which means they’ll be faster. Faster than current SSDs and faster than conventional hard drives, if Intel’s Try Winslow is to be believed. When asked if the drives would outperform Samsung’s current 100MB/s offering, he told CNET “What I can tell you is ours is much better than that”. NAND flash memory prices are dropping, with many manufacturers selling at close to or below production cost prices. This, combined with a need for fast, power sipping storage for notebooks creates a perfect market for SSDs. In fact, Intel says that “2008 is the year of the SSD”. At last. One Laptop Per Child Review from the.Inevitable.Org/anism
Scott C. Lemon at the.Inevitable.Org/anism bought a XO Laptop from the One Laptop Per Child people. The first time I saw these was at CES 2007. They allowed me to play with a prototype, which is very similar to the original. gadgets Page » CES 2007: The $100 Laptop Back then, I found the keyboard completely unusable for my petite hands, but I was excited to hear Scott’s review of the product. the.Inevitable.Org/anism » XO Laptop Thoughts … He didn’t mention the small keyboard, but he had lots to say about it’s “half-baked” status: So what isn’t baked yet? Well … the XO Laptop can’t see any of the FIVE wireless access points at my house! (Read the full post about ‘One Laptop Per Child Review from the.Inevitable.Org/anism’…)

Wasabi Smoke Detector

Wasabi Smoke Detector
Ever wondered how the deaf and hard of hearing will be able to be startled from their slumber in the event of a fire? Fret no more, as there is a new wasabi smoke detector from Japan that helps wake the deaf via scent instead of sound. After all, wasabi is famous for its pungent smell that is said to be so potent, it is even capable of waking up the dead (I wonder if that’s what it takes to raise zombies in Haiti…). This silent smoke alarm will spray canned wasabi extract into a room, and initial tests have shown it to be effective enough to wake up 13 out of 14 test subjects within 2 minutes. Hopefully the pungent smell won’t be overpowered by smoke in the event of a fire. (Read the full post about ‘Wasabi Smoke Detector’…)

KontrolFreek FPS Freek

KontrolFreek FPS Freek
KontrolFreek will soon unleash its latest gaming peripheral known as the FPS Freek to the masses. This snap-on controller will rest on the thumbstick, lengthening them so that small adjustments will translate to accurate aim on the screen while you’re engaged in your favorite FPS title. According to IGN Gear, the “first 20% of the range of motion is the hardest because of spring resistance, which makes small tweaks to aiming especially difficult.” There you have it - a competition legal product that has no official release date as at press time. If you think you’re already at the top of your game and figured out that current hardware is limiting your ability to improve, the FPS Freek is available for pre-order, where a couple will retail for $9.95 while purchasing a quartet costs $17.50. In-air Internet From Gogo Due Soon

In-air Internet From Gogo Due Soon
gogo, a service developed by AirCell will soon be made available for folks who take to the skies, enabling Internet browsing thanks to a modified version of a EVDO Revision A cellular connection that supplies a 3Mbps Internet link shared by the entire plane via WiFi connectivity. Since data is compressed as it is sent across the network, individual users will be able to get a theoretical connection of 2Mbps. I’ve always wondered why the plane’s captain always announce that wireless capability on your device ought to be switched off, but in this case won’t everyone’s WiFi be turned on? AirCell will charge $13 per trip for long distance flights at $10 for flights that last less than 3 hours. (Read the full post about ‘In-air Internet From Gogo Due Soon’…)

AMD roadmap shocker reveals new Turion, Athlon, Sempron mobile CPUs
Posted Mar 11th 2008 4:47PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Laptops It looks like those worried that AMD didn’t have any new processors in the pipeline can rest easy, as an apparently official roadmap turned up by ComputerBase recently revealed that the company is, in fact, doing its job and churning out CPUs at a steady pace. This latest batch consists of four Griffin-based chips, which are spread across the company’s Turion 64 Ultra, Turion 64, Athlon 64, and Sempron mobile processor lines. On the Turion front, the processors are each said to boast DDR2 800MHz memory, along with clock speeds ranging from 2.0GHz to 2.4GHz, and power consumption between 32 and 35 Watts. iRiver E100 Gets Looked At

iRiver E100 Gets Looked At
The folks at Akihabaranews have taken iRiver’s E100 out for a spin, and they have come away with some rather positive views. Other than the fact that there is no Bluetooth compatibility with this unit, a lack of reactivity with the D-Click and autonomy in video mode, the pros far outweigh the cons. I guess the E100 is meant for folks who are still trying to decide between an ipod and a portable media player from another company.
