TSA explains MacBook Air grounding: just doing its job

TSA explains MacBook Air grounding: just doing its job
Posted Mar 13th 2008 6:27AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Laptops What, you don’t read the official Transportation Security Administration blog? No worries, we’ve got your back on this one with the TSA’s official reaction to Michael Nygard’s missed flight as a result of its incredulous macbook air inspection. TSA agents are in fact trained to look for anomolies. So along come the MBA laptop. It’s new (thus, rarely seen), ridiculously thin, and lacks a mechanical hard drive and any visible ports. Requesting further inspection is exactly what Mr. Nygard should have expected. As surly and detached as TSA officers tend to be, in this case they were doing their job just as they were trained. Boombox backpack, for Stormtroopers that like to get down

Boombox backpack, for Stormtroopers that like to get down

Do you remember back in the day when people were all walking around with boomboxes up on their shoulders? I actually never saw anyone do that near where I lived, but I guess it was popular in the big cities. Those days have all since passed, however, this Reppo II backpack seems to be trying to bring it back in a new way. This backpack is just nuts. It is made of a hard outer shell which houses not only a pair of speakers, but an amplifier too. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want that thing buzzing up against my spine for any length of time. This is currently only a concept idea, though at least one prototype has been created. LaCie’s new 1TB desktop hard disk oozes sexy first, backs up your data second

LaCie’s new 1TB desktop hard disk oozes sexy first, backs up your data second
This new terabyte hard disk from LaCie will connect to your PC or Mac using USB 2.0, sorry no Firewire, and works as a “1-click” backup solution for all you back-up obsessed computer users out there. From the outside, you can see that it has a very minimalist design, and the only prominent parts are the USB port and the power button. I think it’s the sexiest thing to happen to external drives since their Porsche lineup or the WD Passports. There are other variants of this model hard disk as well, offering lower storage capacities, and the complete list can be found on LaCie’s web site. Currently there is not any expected ship date or pricing information. Product [LaC (Read the full post about ‘LaCie’s new 1TB desktop hard disk oozes sexy first, backs up your data second’…)

Gadgetry, prostitution, the Spitzer scandal - and MySpace

Gadgetry, prostitution, the Spitzer scandal - and MySpace
The Oldest Profession may also be the oldest form of social networking, but it has been updated, transformed, and enhanced by communications gadgetry, says The Associated Press. The article uses the prostitution scandal involving (now former) New York governor Eliot Spitzer, shown here with chin-up wife Silda Wall Spitzer, a lawyer, to explore how text messaging, electronic funds transfer, web sites, forums, webcams, and other digital technologies embedded in our daily lives are embedded in the commercial sex industry too. To demonstrate the point, the New York Times came up with information about the woman that Spitzer was, um, seeing–including her MySpace page. How To Use Nokia’s Sports Tracker as a Photo Tracker

How To Use Nokia’s Sports Tracker as a Photo Tracker
Ms. Jen was part of Nokia’s Urbanista Diaries Relay, which means they sent her to India to promote the Nokia N82 in all its glory. While on the trip, she realized how well the Sports Tracker (a typically exercise related feature) could be used to track the geo-locations of your photos: Nokia’s Sports Tracker could be ‘Photo Tracker’ - Black Phoebe :: Ms. Jen Here are her directions: Turn on Sports Tracker. Start a “workout”. Make sure the GPS signal is strong. Start going around on the adventures and take photos. Go lots of new places, take photos, make sure the GPS signal remains strong. Stop the Sports Tracker “workout”. (Read the full post about ‘How To Use Nokia’s Sports Tracker as a Photo Tracker’…)

IPhone 2.0 Already Hacked

The iPhone Dev Team have already cracked the beta version of the iphone 2.0 software. Available as part of the SDK download released by Apple a week ago, the 2.0 operating system won’t go public until the summer, but that hasn’t slowed down the hackers, who managed to grab a copy of the actual firmware (the official download only contains an emulator).

Apparently, this time it’s final. Previous hacks have been tied to a specific version of the iPhone OS, meaning that the hackers were playing a cat-and-mouse game with Apple: the cracks, jailbreaks and unlocks were broken with each new update.

This latest crack actually bypasses the iPhone bootloader (the software which loads the OS when a computer is switched on) and allows unsigned code to be written to and run on the iPhone.

DNA PC Concept

DNA PC Concept
The DNA personal computer concept has strong belief in strength in numbers. The more pieces you hook up together, the more powerful it becomes. When alone, it is but a bare-bones computer, ditching a display in favor of a projector and using flash memory to keep it small and compact. Other modules will add more power and functionality, all communicating with one another using wireless technology. Sounds pretty interesting in concept, but this just won’t catch on in real life at least for the foreseeable future considering the overclocking scene of hardcore PC modders we have today who will pooh-pooh this idea. Odyssey Media Hub Supports P2P Now

Odyssey Media Hub Supports P2P Now
Helios Labs has just released a software update for its Odyssey Media Hub, enabling it to support both BitTorrent and ED2K P2P protocols. The whole point behind this update is to enable users to configure media downloads through a Web browser, allowing them to watch completed downloads at a more convenient time, all from the comfort of their living room TV without having to boot up a computer. I guess this is a great arrangement for folks to select a bunch of downloads before they hit the sack, and by the time they wake up tomorrow morning or head back from the office, those shows are all ready to be watched. Rinse, cycle and repeat. (Read the full post about ‘Odyssey Media Hub Supports P2P Now’…)
