Smart Goggles: Eyewear for the Forgetful

If you’re as forgetful as I am (hey, I even forget my name sometimes), this new eyewear could be of use.

Presenting the new Smart Goggles concept by Prof. Kuniyoshi of Tokyo University. It’s basically glasses outfitted with a camera to record everything you see, and a viewfinder. What you need to do is go around the house to record various objects. Whenever you focus on a single item, you need to say its name out loud for the gadget to recognise what it is. When you want to find something, you simply utter its name and its last location will be shown to your via the viewfinder. Problem is, it will take too much time to go around the house and record every single object.

Attack of the Trash-Talking Toys: Nine of the Nastiest

Attack of the Trash-Talking Toys: Nine of the Nastiest
When toy manufacturers make talking toys, they use the cheapest chips and speakers possible: 4-kilohertz audio samples played through a 30-cent piezo buzzer would be an extravagance in this industry. The makers profit when it comes to bean-counting. But they lose when the low quality sounds are misheard by the unscrupulous, the stupid and those who simply hear what they want to hear. Accordingly, here’s our gallery of the most chilling, offensive and/or ridiculous examples of inadvertently nasty-talking toys. Elmo Wants You to Kill Yourself, James The victim’s mom says "Kill James" is "exactly" what it’s saying, and describes how distraught she was after hearing it. Die in a Cloud of Dye With Freshly-Patented Toy Grenades
Hey, kids! Forget cops ‘n’ robbers—let’s play insurgents ‘n’ infantry! Lap Sui et al’s patent for an ultra-realistic mechanical Toy Grenade is all you need for hours of convincing fantasy maiming and menace. Filled with a mixture of powder, dye and compressed air, the toy grenade has a functioning pin that gives a few seconds to throw, duck and cover. "Dye will spread in the air over the intended target area" like one of The Joker’s villainous props. Unfortunately, the hemishell simply splits into two on detonation: how about a version with polystyrene shrapnel? Toy Records Audio Onto a Coffee Cup

Toy Records Audio Onto a Coffee Cup
On Friday we brought you the retro-tastic, hand-cranked Super 8 projector from Japanese educational toy-maker Gakken. It turns out that Gakken has a whole lot of great toys, although the website is somewhat impenetrable. This is the resplendently-titled “Cup Phonograph Kit in Edison Style”, which will record your voice onto a paper cup. Using a second paper cup as a microphone/speaker, the device employs a needle to lay a groove on the first cup. It’ll record around fifteen seconds of scratchy audio and play it back, too. Combine this with the hand-cranked projector an you have yourself a decidedly old-school media center setup. The Phonograph Kit has been discontinued by Gakken, but thanks to Ebay, you can still find one. (Read the full post about ‘Toy Records Audio Onto a Coffee Cup’…)
