Posted Mar 24th 2008 4:59PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Digital Cameras, Misc. gadgets As if the much-hyped RED ONE camera didn’t have enough going for it already, it looks like it could soon be put to use for a slightly unexpected but most welcome task: capturing Super 8 film. That’s apparently possible thanks to what’s described as a “pre-prototype” rig that employs a RED ONE camera and a Moviestuff Workprinter XP system which, thanks to a direct interface to the RED’s GPI input, should allow you to do up 30 single frame captures per second in the RED’s 4K mode. As the On Super 8 blog points out, however, there’s still some “optical wizardry” needed to sit between the RED and the workprinter, but we’re guessing those Super 8 die-hards should be able to take care of that little detail before too long. Posted Mar 24th 2008 3:15PM by Ryan BlockFiled under: Transportation Sometimes even the plugged-in Engadget reader needs to pick up and head out for more relaxing climes. Well, for our fourth birthday this month we’re treating six lucky people to two round trip tickets destined for anywhere Virgin America flies. We wouldn’t want you traveling in something that doesn’t have power, network, and a seatback terminal, though, so you don’t have to sweat about completely unplugging to get from point A to point B. Check out the rules below, and good luck! Leave a comment below. It is in honor of our fourth birthday, after all, so we wouldn’t mind a bit of adulation — but it’s up to you. The headline says nearly everything. What it doesn’t tell you is that this incredible MAME case required just about every skill there is in order to build it: Furniture making (the box is scratch built from MDF), electronics, programming and, of course, Time Travel.
The one-man show behind the MAME TARDIS, Simon Jansen, is more geek than you’ll ever be (this is the guy who rendered the whole of Star Wars in ascii animation).

Posted Mar 24th 2008 9:19AM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: LaptopsAccording to a report on the lately-talkative Acer, the company’s first iteration of Eee PC-competition will be somewhat cheaper than ASUS’ current (and future) sticker prices. In a scant article, speculation abounds that the first wave of Acer-made 8.9-inch laptops will be priced around $350 to $400, while ASUS will market its 8.9-inch micro-top for $50 to $100 more. Word on the street is that Acer will launch its cheapo solution sometime in May, but ASUS will preempt the introduction with an April landing for the 2nd generation Eee.
