In keeping with today’s apparent theme of customizing, hp has just announced three customizable computers in their lineup. The first is the m9200t, which is designed “for the ultimate entertainment experience”. This particular model features an HP Easy Backup button to back up all those files, plus many options including one terabyte (TB) of hard drive space and a Blu-ray DVD writer. There are also some extra storage options including two built-in drive bays for backing up photos, music, and videos. In other words, this model will live up to its tagline. Another big-ticket item is the HP Pavilion a6400z, which has a very low configuration price as low as $299. (Read the full post about ‘Three new customizable computers now available at hp’…)

Posted Mar 31st 2008 11:06AM by Paul MillerFiled under: Gaming We haven’t heard much out of the PS3 homebrew scene so far, which could be due to the console’s delayed popularity, or perhaps because Sony did users a solid out of the gate and included Linux. That said, there’s no stopping these hardcore homebrew types when they put their minds to something, and now Dragula96, a well known PSP hacker, has supposedly found an exploit on the PS3 that let him get a little Hello World proof of concept up and running. At the moment he’s not saying how he did it, but he does say the hack is working on 60GB and 40GB PS3s, running the current 2.20 firmware. Next on the agenda? Pong. Video is after the break. Posted Mar 31st 2008 9:26AM by Paul MillerFiled under: HouseholdWhile we have interns to switch off the lights and regulate Engadget HQ temperature, plenty of folks rely on the the Z-Wave standard for home automation. Unlucky for them, most Z-Wave adapters need to be replaced every year or so to support new protocol features, so ControlThink built what it’s billing as the “industry’s first upgradeable Z-Wave USB Adapter.” The cute little USB dongle goes for $40, and runs at 4x (40kbps) speeds, but is backwards compatible with 1x devices. If you’re like me, you have no idea if you’re maintaining proper tire pressure in your car tires in between trips to the shop. This self-inflating tire, developed in the Czech Republic, takes this out of your hands by inflating automatically through a device called a peristaltic pump which inflates the tire as it turns, keeping it at a constant, safe pressure level. This technology, if adopted widely, will not only make the roads safer, but will have a positive environmental impact by way of savings on fuel (cars with under-inflated tires use more fuel), resulting in a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, and an increase in the lifespan of tires. Read more here. (Read the full post about ‘Self-inflating tire will save money and reduce damage to the environment’…)

Posted Mar 31st 2008 12:58PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Laptops HP’s not one to let its laptops sit on the shelf too long without a revamp, and it’s now let loose yet another raft of updates for its Pavilion line, albeit only in Europe for now. The big news here is the addition of Blu-ray drives across the board, which obviously replaces the hd dvd option previously found on the models they’re replacing. That desirable feature finds its way onto the new Pavilion dv2800, dv6800 and dv9800 series models, which boast 14.1, 15.4, and 17-inch displays, respectively, along with your choice of Core 2 Duo or Turion 64 X2 processors, integrated graphics or NVIDIA GeForce 8400M or 8600M (depending on the model) and even a Blu-ray burner on the 17-inch model. (Video Produced by Analiza Savage, Edited by Michael Lennon, Camera by John Ross) Casio G’zOne Type-SL Casio has been pumping out G’zOnes like cray-cray. In a little over a year, the rugged watch maker has updated the phone twice, with the newest iteration being the Type-SL. But we had to wonder — was Casio really improving on its ultra-rugged design, or just rehashing the same phone? To sort this matter out, we had to destroy both our Type-SL and one of our editors. . . . but we’ll get to that later. As a whole the Type-SL packs few surprises. Like past iterations of the G’zOne, the Type-SL sports military grade resistance to water, dust, and shock damage. In a bid to encourage development for its Xandros Linux version of the Eee PC, Asus released a software development kit that is free to download and use.
The kit is available on SourceForge and consists of a 1.2GB disc image containing the following:
- The Eclipse development environment
- Qt and Qt 4 plug-in for Eclipse
- Debian packaging wizard by Xandros
- Example C and C++ code as well as a range of documentation
Asus has also taken the time to create a supporting PDF user guide that covers how to use the SDK as well as information covering everything from application design to installation methods.
Read more at PC Pro.
Matthew’s Opinion
My first question is whether the company will do a similar SDK for the Windows version of the Eee PC?
