Asus encourages software development with Eee PC kit

In a bid to encourage development for its Xandros Linux version of the Eee PC, Asus released a software development kit that is free to download and use.

The kit is available on SourceForge and consists of a 1.2GB disc image containing the following:

  • The Eclipse development environment
  • Qt and Qt 4 plug-in for Eclipse
  • Debian packaging wizard by Xandros
  • Example C and C++ code as well as a range of documentation

Asus has also taken the time to create a supporting PDF user guide that covers how to use the SDK as well as information covering everything from application design to installation methods.

Matthew’s Opinion

My first question is whether the company will do a similar SDK for the Windows version of the Eee PC? That would not only be useful for the Asus machine, but also depending on the tools included may act as a good resource for general Windows application development. We will just have to wait and see whether that happens.

As for supporting development with a free SDK, it just goes to show how much Asus cares about the machine and building a community around it. I’m sure owners will take full advantage and start creating new applications that either fill a gap or fix some problems the machine has.
