ViewSonic has released a new LCD projector known as the PJ513DB. This all-black unit packs in more Texas Instruments hardware that will be able to generate up to 2,200 lumens of brightness and a contrast ratio of 2,000 to 1. The resolution isn’t too impressive though at 800 x 600 resolution, but it is able to recognize larger resolutions via VGA, accepting up to 720p/1080i widescreen video as long as you have the relevant adapters like a bundled component adapter or third-party DVI attachments. If you happen to have $499 in your pocket right now, you will be able to pick up the 5.7 pound ViewSonic PJ513DB.
When we first saw Coway’s SWV-08AM we could’ve sworn it was part of a turntable. Turns out it’s a "megasonic" replacement for your faucet. Although Coway’s description summons images of exploding dishes/heads, it uses a much less destructive mechanism. This stainless steel gadget infuses tap water with sound waves to clean things like vegetables, flatware, and even pans while needing hardly any detergent. The trick lies in the 1.6MHz frequency emitted from the device. When paired with the regular water coming through the faucet, it creates (and pops) microscopic cavitation bubbles which break up and lift off dirt. It’s certainly a nifty gadget for the kitchen, but I think we’re going to hold out for an automaton that just does the dishes for us. UK buyers can now get their hands on an 8GB iPhone for £169 ($331), down from £269 ($528). The 16GB model remains at the high, high price of “just £329″ ($645). This makes it a very appealing alternative to the 8GB ipod Touch, which is £199. In contrast to T-Mobile’s knock down prices in Germany, which run on a sliding scale dependent on which call-plan you sign up for, O2’s price is the same across the board. The almost universal conclusion across the internet is that this is a stock clearance to shift inventory before the 3G iphone hits. The timing is right; the price offer ends June 1st, just when we are expecting to see a new version. One thing has been worrying me, though. Nikon’s flagship camera and object of desire for flash-phobic photographers everywhere has received a few fixes and new features in a firmware update. The “big” additions are focus point brightness control (you can choose how bright the squares are in the viewfinder), lens vignetting control (which will automatically compensate for light drop-off at the image edges, tailored to the lens you are using), and the auto ISO function now lets you select shutter speeds as high as 1/4000 sec as the minimum. Other than that, there are a few changes which show that Nikon engineers have really been sweating the (pointless) details.: When shutter speed and/or aperture are locked with shooting in live view mode, using the “L” (command lock) button, an “L” icon is now displayed in the camera monitor. Instead of hiring older designers, Nissan has invented an old-suit, an outfit which simulates the effects of aging. Strap it on and you’ll immediately feel stiffer, heavier, less able to balance, and the included goggles will make it harder to see. Why? So young designers can better understand how the rapidly aging population of Japan experience their cars, and thus make them easier to use for a growing segment of the market. The concept is known as “Universal Design”, and has has been used in Japan before, but the Nipponese boffins need to hurry up and make us a self-driving car already. That way, when we use the patented Gadget Lab method to blur our vision and feel stiffer, heavier and less able to balance (beer), we too will have a safe ride home. Ben Heckendorn’s Apple ][ laptop may be one of the cleanest mods we’ve seen. So, it’s no surprise that the guys at Linden Labs went under the hood for their Apple ][ hack. Through some serial cable tweakery and a custom screenshot program, the guys were able to get an Apple ][c to display a very, very basic version of Second Life. Be sure to check out the full tutorial video above!

RED Digital announced the Scarlet handheld specialty camera at the NAB 2008 conference this week (in Vegas of course), and it’s a potentially red-hot build. Due to its high-quality, sexy-looking specs, they’re already calling it, rather sheepishly, the ‘Pocket Pro.’ No joke required here, other than the fact that when its whole build is set up, the camera is most definitely not large enough to fit in anyone’s pocket. The Scarlet has a 2/3-inch Mysterium X sensor, 8X t2.8 Zoom lens, and can shoot up to 120 frames per second at a 3K (3000 pixel) resolution. That is high, though not as high as last year’s RED One camera. Some of the other quality features include the 100 MB/second capture rate of RAW HD video, and a burst option at 180 fps. In the cutthroat storage market profit margins are small and the competition rife. Seagate has decided that it’s time to start getting aggressive and is actioning some patents it believes are being violated by solid state drive (SSD) manufacturers.
The company STEC, which manufacture the Zeus-IOPS SSDs for enterprise customers, is the first target. Seagate claims STEC is violating four patents it holds relating to the communication of an SSD with a computer, including how they handle error corrections and how they handle memory backups.
