PC makers want to extend XP’s life

PC makers want to extend XP’s life
It goes to say a whole lot when even PC makers themselves want to extend Microsoft Windows XP’s shelf life beyond what the software giant themselves want. Currently, the deadline stands at June 30 where PC makers can no longer sell PCs with Windows XP after that date, and it is interesting to see some of the different PC makers take a creative approach to this apparent dilemma. Both HP and Dell plan to offer machines running on Windows XP way after June, taking advantage of the “downgrade rights” offered as part of the Windows Vista license agreement. Pretty interesting, as these computers are actually Vista Business or Vista Ultimate machines which have been factory downgraded to XP at the customer’s request. AT&T and Starbucks offer WiFi Service

AT&T and Starbucks have come to an agreement, kicking off a nationwide effort that will see AT&T’s WiFi service being offered at company-operated Starbucks stores with locations in San Antonio being the first in the marketplace. When May 1 comes around, qualifying AT&T high speed Internet and WiFi customers will have complimentary WiFi access at more than 7,000 Starbucks locations nationwide. Sounds great - hopefully the WiFi network has been set up in such a manner where even Nintendo DS Lites and Sony PSPs will be able to take advantage of this free service for some wireless gaming goodness.

Seiko SlimStick

Seiko SlimStick
A pedometer is a pedometer is a pedometer, right? Wrong! The Seiko SlimStick certainly brings about a whole new dimension to your day-to-day exercise regime as it boasts modern dual-axis accelerometers that track the magnitude of your movements, providing greater value to a more intensive exercise. All you need to do is clip the SlimStick onto your clothes or place it in your pocket and you’re good to go. The SlimStick is able to count the number of calories burned throughout the day, the length of time you were active, total number of steps walked and an overall exercise quality score. It has enough memory to hold up to a dozen weeks’ worth of summarized data which you can refer to. (Read the full post about ‘Seiko SlimStick’…)

Nokia announces 3 new mid-range phones; 6600 Fold, 6600 Slide, 3600 Slide

Nokia announces 3 new mid-range phones; 6600 Fold, 6600 Slide, 3600 Slide
It just last week when Nokia introduced the 5220 and 5320 and we now see another three hitting the market. This time its the 6600 Fold, 6600 Slide and the 3600 Slide. Nokia is promoting the new handsets as “beautiful to use” which would make on think that these new handsets have nothing much to offer except for an eye-pleasing design. True to the tagline, the first two phones which bear the same model number 6600 are your usual Nokia mid-range mobile handsets with nothing much to offer in terms of high-end functionality. Well, aside from the 3G support in the 6600 Fold and a 3.2-megapixel camera in the 6600 Slide. Even the GPS functionality of the 6600 is not an inherent feature but an optional one instead. Weekend Washbag - For Him

Weekend Washbag - For Him
Weekend Washbag - For Him I’ve never done it myself, of course, but crashing out on the floor of a chum’s flat can be a soul-destroying experience, particularly if it’s on a school night and you find yourself facing a slog to work the next morning, unshaven, unkempt and reeking of stale cider. RIM Wants To Compete With iPhone

RIM Wants To Compete With iPhone
RIM apparently has a product in the making known as AK - which obviously enough, stands for “Apple Killer”. It will, of course be a touch screen device and RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis let fire his salvo, “I couldn’t type on [the iphone] and I still can’t type on it, and a lot of my friends can’t type on it. It’s hard to type on a piece of glass.” It would be interesting to see what kind of blackberry that will end up as. I know the consumers are just going to so love such competition. RolerBall for summer fun

RolerBall for summer fun
Fancy getting an adrenaline rush? Why not check out the RolerBall - do make sure you take the necessary precautions beforehand though. Once inflated this behemoth stands about three metres high, and is rather like a spherical cushioned igloo. The idea, which sounds insane, is to put it at the top of a slope (we suggest a very gentle one with a long unobstructed run-off), strap yourself in, and then roll down the hill trying not to lose your lunch. Inside the centre shell are two harnesses, so you could have two people feeling the adrenalin rush, and probably the queasiness, together. There is a version of this mad sport that requires you to remove the harnesses, add a bucket or two of water, tie in the seal (which comes with the ball and straps into the opening), and launch yourself off. Epson announces their plain-jane Endeavor NA104 notebook

Epson announces their plain-jane Endeavor NA104 notebook
Epson has announced a new notebook, the Endeavor NA104. Without much excitement the NA104 offers some pretty standard features as well as an overall basic look and design. Additional features include 512MB up to 1.5GB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive. The NA104 will offer a choice to come with either Windows XP or Vista installed. Like we mentioned, nothing special.
