BlackBerry touchscreen phone to be dubbed ‘Thunder’

BlackBerry touchscreen phone to be dubbed ‘Thunder’
by Joshua Topolsky, posted May 13th 2008 at 12:42PM The industrious Boy Genius has apparently unearthed more juicy tidbits about that rumored blackberry touchscreen device. Word from BG is that the new iphone-ish handset is now internally dubbed the “Thunder,” and will come to Verizon and Vodafone as an exclusive device. The phone will reportedly have four physical keys (send, end, menu, and back), sport a hybrid CDMA EV-DO Rev. C / GSM HSPA radio, and could come equipped with a 4G LTE component. Outside Waterloo’s labs, the device could be known as the BlackBerry 9500 — though it’s possible that designation could change. AMD fires two execs, starts “Central Engineering” group

AMD fires two execs, starts “Central Engineering” group
by Nilay Patel, posted May 13th 2008 at 10:49AMAMD’s managed to distract us a bit from its troubles lately with some interesting chip announcements and bold predictions, but reality keeps setting in — the company announced another executive shuffling today as the company keeps losing money and ground to Intel. Out this time are former EVP of Computing Solutions Mario Rivas and “Chief Talent Officer” Michel Cadieux, as well as 1600 workers being laid off worldwide. Former server chief Randy Allen will replace Rivas and Allen Sockwell is getting Cadieux’s old job, but the more interesting move is the creation of a new division called Central Engineering, which will oversee all of the company’s roadmaps from here on out. Creative gets official with Vado cheapcorder

Creative gets official with Vado cheapcorder
by Donald Melanson, posted May 13th 2008 at 1:42PM JR.com may have let the cat of the bag, but Creative’s not letting that stop it from getting all official with its new Vado Pocket Video Cam, which is taking square aim at the likes of Pure Digital’s Flip Video cheapcorder. Like the Flip, Creative’s offering comes packing a lowly-but-YouTube-friendly 640 x 480 resolution, along with 2GB of built-in memory (with no expansion options), a 2-inch display, a flip-out USB connector, and a promised two hours of battery life on a charge. Not exactly the most feature-packed camera out there (even for a budget model), but the $100 price tag is certainly right, and you can get it in your choice of silver or hot pink. Sarotech intro’s the Hardbox, a book-style external hard drive with LED’s

Sarotech intro’s the Hardbox, a book-style external hard drive with LED’s
For those looking to give their external hard drive a little camouflage within their home office, the Hardbox may be just what you need. We do mean it though when we say little, because while the drive itself has the appearance of a book, it still has two external LED lights. Though we cannot say for sure, it seems those LED’s would most likely draw some attention in the midst of those regular books on your shelf. The drive is being offered up from Sarotech and has support for 3.5-inch SATA I or II hard drives with support for up to 1GB. The Hardbox comes with a built-in power supply and ships with “powerful backup software.” It offers up a USB connection, but seems to be missing one important item, a fan. Interview With Eye-Fi CEO Jef Holove

Interview With Eye-Fi CEO Jef Holove
Yesterday the WiFi memory card people, Eye-Fi, announced a new SD card which we at Gadget Lab think will change the way photos are shared. The Eye-Fi Explore brings a slot-in geotagging solution to anyone with an SD card slot in their camera, so every photo you take will be stamped with the location you were in. In addition, you can finally use a digicam without a computer. The Eye-Fi will log on to free hotspots and send your snaps out into the cloud, to end up at your photo site of choice. We had a chat with Eye-Fi CEO Jef Holove to see how the card works and what it might mean for the future of photography. Gadget Lab: The Eye-Fi Explore is a huge step for geotagging. Ringbo Rideable Robot

Ringbo Rideable Robot
So, your little toddler has virtually every toy he/she needs? Well, just in case you think that there isn’t anything left to buy, along pops the Ringo rideable robot. This tiny positronic mount can be controlled through a pair of ear-like joysticks, and that’s about all it does. Well, at least it gives you and the missus some respite from the little tyke to take some much deserved time off for yourselves. No idea on just how long the battery life is after a full charge, but it shouldn’t be easy on your pockets at all if you decide on picking one up. (Read the full post about ‘Ringbo Rideable Robot’…)

First Intel Atom based MID gets priced — $1131!?

First Intel Atom based MID gets priced — $1131!?
by Nilay Patel, posted May 13th 2008 at 6:08AM Intel’s been making a lot of noise about MIDs for a while now, but we’re going to guarantee that the entire category flops if this first wave of pricing info is accurate. Australian importer Tegatech’s got the Gigabyte M528 up for pre-order, and while we’re intrigued by the 800MHz Atom processor, 512MB of RAM, and 8GB SSD, we’re certainly not willing to pay AU$1199 ($1131) to satisfy our curiosity — especially since the Linux build was so half-baked when we played with this thing at CeBIT.
