Forget the cash, forget the credit cards, you can even forget the family pictures – mobile phones are now more important to people than their wallets. A recent survey found that more than 38% of workers would choose their mobile phones over other essentials – including their wallets, keys, laptops or digital music players if they had to leave the house for 24 hours and could take only one item. The survey was sponsored by Nortel Networks Corp, market research firm IDC conducted the survey and found that more than 38% people chose their mobile phones first, while less than 30% picked their wallets as their essential of choice. by Sean Cooper, posted May 16th 2008 at 12:44PM Nothing new to report on the Touch Diamond’s tech here, but wow, look how fun the box is! Of course, we know you’re all waiting to see what they stuffed in the wedge-shaped package, and the answer is a charger, headset, USB cable, a manual or two, and the software. The charger appears to be a universal job with a swappable plug for travel, and the headset a typical example of an HTC pack-in — albeit with a dash of fun and angular design. Typepad bloggers who use the BlackBerry Curve or the Pearl will have no more reason not to update their blogs a little more often, as Six Apart is bringing its native mobile blogging application to both BlackBerry handsets. One week ago, we reported about how Google added new features to its translation service, like new languages and language detection, but back then it still had not even been announced by Google yet. The day for that has come, though, and that day is today. Google now officially announces the addition of 10 new languages to its translation service, including Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Finnish, Hindi, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian and Swedish. Also, as noted in our earlier post, there is a new feature called “Detect Language” that saves you from having to figure out the language of origin of the text or web page you’re translating. by Darren Murph, posted May 16th 2008 at 7:55AM XtremeNotebooks is taking its quad-core Xtreme 917V up a notch by tossing an Intel X3360 Xeon processor in there. Notably, the company is pushing this as the “first US-distributed” lappie to boast such a chip, but we already saw Eurocom reveal its X3360-based D901C PHANTOM-X earlier this week. Semantics aside, prospective buyers can get this mobile server equipped with a Blu-ray burner, RAID 0/1/5 hard drive arrays, twin NVIDIA GeForce 8800 or Quadro FX GPU setups and up to 4GB of RAM. by Joshua Topolsky, posted May 15th 2008 at 7:32PMIn a press release today, Sprint and Samsung “declared” that mobile WiMAX technology is “now ready for commercial service.” Sounds exciting right? Well, it’s kind of like saying that a car is “ready to drive” — you still can’t do much without the keys and a road. Since Sprint has seen recent delays, litigation, and various other forms of badness, this does kind of come off as an empty PR move.
