Sprint defends its 5GB bandwidth cap

Sprint defends its 5GB bandwidth cap
After several cries and complaints, Sprint has finally explained its decision to cap its “unlimited” data usage plan to 5GB a month, plus 300MB a month of off-network roaming. According to Sprint, the new limit is plenty enough, since it only affects 0.5% of customers. Sprint also notes that the limit applies to both existing and current consumer and individual accounts, but not corporate, business, public sector, or government contracts. The company states that the Simply Unlimited plan is exempt from the new rule—as the limit only applies to data cards and phone-as-modem plans. Interestingly, Sprint is permitting customers to go over the limit only if they do not exceed the limit in two out of three consecutive months—otherwise, termination is possible. Keep Your Membership Cards In Your iPhone

Keep Your Membership Cards In Your iPhone
I HATE store cards. You know, those bar code cards that EVERY store makes you keep in your wallet to in order to get discounts? I have a veritable BRICK of them in my purse. ‘t Is Goud had a good idea. ‘t Is Goud - WalletCards on my iPhone He scanned his cards using a scanner and put the photos on his iphone. The screen on the iPhone is good enough that a scanner can read the bar code from the scanned card. A good way to slim down your brick of cards in your wallet is to carry scans of the cards in your iPhone. I tried this and they look pretty good: Now, all I have to do is test this theory. I’m sure I can use my iPhone scanned card at the self-checkout in the grocery store, but will Costco let me into the store with just the scan of my card? Japanese government worried about child cellphone addiction

The Japanese Prime Minister, Yasuo Fukuda, has this week approved a new initiative to warn parents across Japan about the dangers of allowing their children to use mobile phones for long periods of time.

The initiative was thought up as a response to the growing number of children thought to be addicted to mobile phone use. Their use is going on for several hours a day and stopping children from getting involved in other activities away from the phones.

Masahura Kuba, the government official in charge of the initiative, commented:

Japanese parents are giving cell phones to their children without giving it enough thought … In Japan, cell phones have become an expensive toy.

ASUS 10-inch Eee PC 1000-series to launch at Computex?

ASUS 10-inch Eee PC 1000-series to launch at Computex?
by Darren Murph, posted May 28th 2008 at 3:54AM Oh, snap. As if it weren’t official enough already, the subnote war is on. According to a Computex invitation from ASUS, the outfit is planning to not only showcase the Eee PC 901, but also a brand new variant that will likely go mano a mano with the 10-inch MSI Wind. We quote: “[ASUS] would also like to specially extend an invitation to you to attend the official global launch of the new Eee PC 901 and 1000 series.” There’s no details beyond that right there, but it’s plenty to whet our appetites on the heels of the 10.6-inch Eee PC 1001 evidence we’ve already collected. Oh Tuesday, you seem so far away. [Via GizmoLounge]Read PermalinkEmail this5 CommentsFiled under (Read the full post about ‘ASUS 10-inch Eee PC 1000-series to launch at Computex?’…)

Spray-on Explosive Detector

Spray-on Explosive Detector
Man, and I thought that explosive detectors normally came in the form of highly-trained dogs or high-tech gizmos, but scientists at the University of California, San Diego have managed to come up with a spray-on explosive detector. This non-invasive method will glow blue under UV light in the presence of nitrogen-containing explosives, where its silafluorene-fluorene copolymer is sensitive enough to detect just a billionth of a gram of explosive. Now that’s really something and could prove important in the fight against terror as you never know when the next attack might come along and in what form. Also, this is pretty much an instant method of knowing whether things are going to go ka-boom around you. (Read the full post about ‘Spray-on Explosive Detector’…)
