Amazon to expand into video streaming

At the D: All Things Digital conference this week Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, has said the company is set to introduce video-on-demand along side the slew of other digital services it has brought online recently.

The service was described as a “for-pay streaming service“, that will be released in the next several weeks. No further information was forthcoming from Jeff or Amazon representatives after his talk.

The company has introduced a number of new digital services recently including the Kindle e-reader, a digital music store and downloadable movies and TV shows. Adding a streaming service means extra flexibility for the customers who will no longer have to download a movie they have bought to watch.

Both highlight videos from the talk with Jeff Bezos have been included below. His mention of the streaming service is contained in the second of the two videos.

Matthew’s Opinion

Video streaming does round-out the ervices Amazon is offering. You can now buy a film on a physical disc in DVD and Blu-Ray formats, download a film for viewing and soon instantly watch it via streaming. The deal with TiVo also offers easy movie rentals straight to your TV.

With such a wide-range of options for customers there are few competitors that can challenge them and the company seems determined to stay at the top of the pile for online retailers. Customers certainly shouldn’t be complaining as it not only offers them flexibility, but also keeps other online retailers on their toes with prices and new features.

So where next for Amazon? I’m sure they will continue to debelop the Kindle format and I expect the Kindle 2 to be much improved. Whether that particular device has a long-term future is yet to be seen, but the e-reader needed a champion and Amazon came forward.
