by Ryan Block, posted May 30th 2008 at 2:32PM Whoa, hard to believe its been three years since the last internationalized version of Engadget launched, but we’re back and have a number of new sites in the pipeline — kicking off with Engadget in Polish! Why Polish, you ask? Well, besides the fact that we had some amazing talent waiting in the wings to blow it out, it’s also a smaller (dare we say underserved?) market to soft-launch in that allows us to work out the kinks as we prepare to do even more international versions of Engadget in the coming weeks and months. So if Polish isn’t your bag, just hang tight, you’ll be seeing even more localized Engadgets soon enough. The first installment of the episodic Penny Arcade game, “On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness,” has broken the three-day sales record for an initial offering on Xbox Live Arcade by earning $330,000 over that time. The previous record holder was Worms HD. The sales figures for the game proves that arcade download offerings do not need to have small price points to be successful, as the game clocks in at $20, much more than the typical $5 to $10 price for other games on the service. The success of the game certainly draws heavily from the strong fanbase the comic has among gamers, bringing the colorful art style and notorious Penny Arcade humor into a solid RPG experience. Rumors are flying fast and hard as we all gear up mentally for the big Apple party coming June 9 at 10 am. One I really like is the idea of 2 iPhones being introduced. Isn’t it more like Apple to whip out something they’ve undersold and surprise us? Apple knows we love surprises and I suspect they’ll not disappoint this year. Back in December I squawked about why an iphone Nano makes lots of sense for Apple, AT&T and consumers. The family line that helped make the ipod such a raving success could do the same for the iPhone and give us a more comfortable feeling about Jobs claim they’ll hit their target numbers. A down market iPhone Nano, selling for $199 would sell off shelves faster than water jugs at the start of Hurricane Season (coming Sunday to a coastal town near you). Now this is definitely one vehicle that I would love to try out, although I suspect I’ll need some sort of logging license before Greenpeace activists and tree huggers come running after me. Dubbed the Plustech Oy Walking Machine, this logging machine was specially designed to minimize damage to the forest during logging activities (sounds like an oxymoron, eh), featuring the ability to move around in a more agile manner compared to wheeled and tracked logging machines. Obstacles (as well as tiny animals) can simply be stepped over in order to preserve as much of the forest as possible, taking only what loggers are after and not more than that. A Clone Trooper is but a Clone Trooper, right? Apparently not, if you happen to be a hardcore Star Wars fan with plenty of time and passion on your hands to convert this regular LEGO Clone Trooper into one that has glowing eyes, thanks to the use of LED. It isn’t too difficult to throw in the LED, but I guess you’ll need a steady pair of hands and a fair number of LEGO figures before you get the entire process down pat. by Nilay Patel, posted May 30th 2008 at 7:37AMSSDs are the new heat, and while all sorts of upstarts have been cranking them out old-school drive manufacturer Seagate has mostly sat it out and made a lot of noise about patent lawsuits. The lawsuits aren’t going away (obviously), but CEO Bill Watkins told PC World yesterday that the company is finally getting ready to release its first SSD sometime next year, as well as launch a line of 2TB traditional hard drives. Watkins said that SSDs weren’t yet price-competitive for consumers (uh, yeah), and that Seagate won’t focus on consumer SSDs until the price falls to the 10-cents-per-GB level. Until then, the target market is data centers looking to process data quickly or save on en (Read the full post about ‘Seagate to jump into the SSD game, 2TB spinners planned for next year’…)

Hot on the heels of their ultra popular Eee 701 and the recent release of the Eee 900, Asus has announced it will release a 10 inch version called the Eee 1000 on June 3. Sources speculate that Asus is pushing the release to coincide with the release of the MSI Wind, which like the 1000, will have a 10-inch screen. Since the release of the popular Eee 700 and 701, there has been a flurry of new subnote book releases, including the Everex Cloudbook and HP Mininote. Neither has had very good reviews. Acer will be the next to join in with an 8.9 inch subnote book being planned. It’s scheduled to be offered for about $470. I own an Eee 700 series and I am quite pleased with it. There are already lots of timed sprinkler systems out there that help you to automate watering your lawn and plants to keep them looking their best, but you usually have to intervene when the weather threatens to make your sprinklers moot. For example, when it rains or gets too cold. Enter Orbit Irrigation’s solar-powered wireless rain/freeze sensor. Ok, that was a mouthful. Let’s break it down. This sensor acts together with the Orbit Professional Irrigation System (aka timed sprinkler) to detect when there’s rain (or even after it has rained) or when it’s freezing. It communicates wirelessly to the Sprinkler system to let it know when to shut off and when it can resume operations.
