Google Maps for mobile updated to version 2.2; features transit directions

Google Maps for mobile updated to version 2.2; features transit directions
Google has just made available version 2.2 of its useful Google Maps for mobile application. Adding to the previously introduced public transportation for San Francisco is a new feature which lets users get transit directions all in the same place, similar to the web-based Google Maps. It has even expanded its coverage to include Chicago, Seattle, Vancouver as well as over 40 other cities across the US. Additionally, version 2.2 lets users find the last transit trips of the day in covered cities. This comes in handy for users who rely on public transit, since they can easily schedule their activities at night. Likewise, users can also view earlier trips made by public transit. Hulu, YouTube content coming to the Roku Netflix Player?

Hulu, YouTube content coming to the Roku Netflix Player?
While nothing has been confirmed, there is a possibility that the Roku Netflix Player could be offering content from additional providers in the future. A recent interview conducted by Hot Hardware with the VP of Consumer Products for Roku, Tim Twerdahl gave some interesting clues, but sadly did not go into specifics. It was however confirmed that their deal with Netflix will allow them “to seek out other content providers to put their content on the Roku box.” While the previously mentioned Hulu and YouTube are just speculation, Tim Twerdahl, the VP of Consumer Products for Roku did state that they are “talking to all big web video providers right now” and they are considering a number of options. YouMail brings web voicemail access to mobile phones

YouMail brings web voicemail access to mobile phones
You know that free visual voicemail solution called YouMail? Well they have recently added a new service that will let users view voicemail messages from their mobile phones, in the same way that they could previously access them online through a PC. Although this YouMail offering is not the first of its kind service, their voice to mobile phone conversion service took it one notch higher by retaining the audio and organizational features of its regular service, meaning its not a stripped down mobile version. Users just need to point their mobile phone’s browser to http://youmail.com, login to their YouMail account and they can start viewing their messages as they normally would from a laptop or desktop computer. He’s thinking: “Oh, sure, life is grand on this work bench, picking up nuts and bolts, but I want to explore the big wide open. I want to be built by that person, reading this post right now on Engadget, so we can be friends forever and ever.” Now, how can you resist a face like that? This particular DIY Wall-E’s creator wrote up a 50 step tutorial so you can get to work right this very moment bringing this robotic little fuzzball to life. Don’t delay. HTC Touch Diamond boot video, for your eyes only

HTC Touch Diamond boot video, for your eyes only
by Joshua Topolsky, posted Jun 6th 2008 at 3:55PM For those of you who absolutely, positively can’t wait to see more of the Touch Diamond in action, the folks over at pocketnow are giving you a taste of what it’s like to hold one in your hands. Apparently, when you boot up the phone you’re greeted with a helpful video showing you how to navigate the heavily-skinned version of Windows Mobile (AKA Touch Flo 3D) that it sports. Needless to say, it’s smoother than a baby’s bottom. Not that we’d know. Video after the break in its full 640 x 480 resolution. Update: It looks like pocketnow (or at least the video link) have gone the way of Amazon — we’ll try to get it back up for you.Update 2: We’ve got a janky YouTube version up after the break. Intel antitrust investigation officially launched by FTC

Intel antitrust investigation officially launched by FTC
by Paul Miller, posted Jun 6th 2008 at 1:56PM Intel is no stranger to antitrust problems, the company just got nailed with a $25 million fine in Korea, Europe’s been breathing down its neck for years, and AMD has been trying to drum up antitrust accusations against Intel since time immemorial, but the FTC just embarked upon what could be Intel’s biggest headache yet. The Federal Trade Commission has opened up a formal antitrust investigation of Intel, and has subpoenaed Intel, AMD and other smaller competitors for dirt on the company. Intel is being accused of using pricing policies designed to maintain a near-monopoly on the market, and while the company has been protected from a formal FTC inquiry by former head Deborah Majoras, the new chairman William Kovacic seems to see things a bit differently. Six-legged robot can climb walls

Ok, this is pretty amazing and somewhat scary in how much Sci-Fi today’s scientists and engineers are turning into reality. RiSE is a robot that can literally climb walls. RiSe adjusts its shape to deal with the curvature of the surface it’s on, and has multiple sensors on each of its six feet as well body to sense and compensate for inertia and surface material.

Boston Dynamics is developing RiSe with funding from DARPA in conjunction with a number of universities. Take a look at the amazing video over at the Boston Dynamics website.

Softbank 923SH Mobile Phone

Softbank 923SH Mobile Phone
I have to admit that I am a fan of those types of phones like the Sidekick which can flip out their screens for a horizontal read. So I was naturally attracted to the 923SH, one of ten new phones to come out from Softbank. The first question I had to ask was how does the phone on the left fold up to the phone on the right? Clearly, Softbank has some folding technology that I do not know about. The display on the 923SH is something that we do know about. It uses Sharp’s unique AQUOS LCD panel, technology that we reported about with the SE94 Series. Clearly, this HDTV technology has somehow been miniaturized, and this display is capable of many, many colors. This phone is capable of recording video content. Antiquated hardware used to masterfully remix Radiohead’s Nude

Antiquated hardware used to masterfully remix Radiohead’s Nude
by Darren Murph, posted Jun 6th 2008 at 11:52AM It takes some serious game to rise above the legions of mediocre DIYers out there and stand tall as a true legend. Judging by the video posted up after the cut, James Houston can now consider himself one of the elite. Somehow, this cat managed to tackle the nearly impossible task of remixing Radiohead’s Nude without defacing it entirely (read: merging bits and pieces of the tune into a 4/4 arrangement and calling it a day). Instead, he utilized a host of aging hardware (Sinclar ZX Spectrum, Epson LX-81 dot matrix printer, HP Scanjet 3c, etc.) to create a rendition that even Yorke could admire.
