Super-strong nanopaper is seven times stronger, 1,000 times smaller

Super-strong nanopaper is seven times stronger, 1,000 times smaller
by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted Jun 10th 2008 at 2:42PM So much for Ballmer’s vision of a paperless world — that is, if the mighty nanofiber paper has anything to do with it. This new paper is made out of the same cellulose your regulation legal pad, but scientists at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden were able to get the fiber so small and defect-free in this version — about 1,000 times smaller — that it’s more than seven times as strong. By breaking down wood pulp with enzymes and beating it mechanically and then treating the tiny fibers with carboxymethanol, they were able to get the new paper to a tensile strength of 214 megapascals (MPa) compared with the normal 30 MPa. Solar Powered Golf Cart

Solar Powered Golf Cart
Golf isn’t exactly the greenest sport (and I ain’t talking about the color of the grass either) in the world, what with the tremendous amount of upkeep the courses need. In addition, traveling in a golf cart often adds to the pollution problem - thankfully there are inventions like this Solar Powered Golf Cart. This is the electric golf cart that has an array of 72 photovoltaic cells built into the roof that collect solar energy, providing up to 33% more range between recharges than non-solar electric golf carts. The carts 160-watt array produces up to three amps per hour for its 48-volt rechargeable battery system, providing a range of up to 49 miles approximately 10 rounds of golf before requiring a full recharge (overnight via its 6′ long AC adapter; 15 hours via its solar array). Gadgetell Review: Navigon 2100 Max GPS

Gadgetell Review: Navigon 2100 Max GPS
Product: Navigon 2100 Max GPS Price and Availability: Currently available and retailing for $299 Rating: 7/10 Pros: Large, easy to see display. The unit was easy to use and easy to set up. Cons: Lacks auto shut off, seemed sluggish at times. Overall: A nice GPS, but one that could be much better with a slightly lower price. This was an interesting review for me, as I had time to not only review it myself, but the opportunity to travel with both friends and family members and was able to bring it along and get some additional opinions. Everyone I showed the 2100 Max to was in awe over the overall style and look as well as the ease of use, most were also fairly happy with the price. The unit offers a 4.3-inch touchscreen display that was more than sufficient and displayed either the 2-D or 3-D Reality mode very well. HP revives Voodoo brand with new Omen and Envy

HP revives Voodoo brand with new Omen and Envy
When HP released its BlackBird gaming system not long after acquiring Voodoo PC, there was some question about the future of the Voodoo brand. Everyone at HP was saying that the Voodoo would be able to reach the next level thanks to HP’s tremendous resources but the critically acclaimed BlackBird, which could top the $5000 mark, did not seem in line with the rhetoric. Now, the better part of year after the BlackBird’s September announcement, we are starting to see movement from Voodoo. The division of HP has two announcements for computer enthusiasts and both are big, so long as you have some cash behind your love of high-end computers. The first is the Envy. Silverlight 2 will add Python and Ruby support

Microsoft has outlined plans to support both Ruby and Python scripting languages in Silverlight 2, giving developers an alternative to Javascript and introducing ARAX and APAX alongside the standard AJAX.

The new client-side scripting capabilities were outlined by Brian Goldfarn, group manager for Microsoft’s developer division. During an interview given late last week he said:

What we’ve done through Silverlight is to make it possible to use Ruby or Python as an alternative to JavaScript for building the same types of applications … All the browser needs to have is Silverlight installed and then developers can take advantage of these languages.

By introducing support for these new scripting languages Microsoft is hoping to open up the platform to new developers and make their work easier.
