BMW unveils Gina fabric concept car

BMW unveils Gina fabric concept car
BMW have taken the veil off their new concept car and with it asked an interesting question - why does the skin of our vehicles have to be made of a rigid metal? The new car is called the BMW Gina, with Gina being an acronym for Geometry in N Adaptations. The model is based on a Z8 Roadster, but the concept is very different. Gone is the shiny metallic surface, the door handles and lights, and instead you have a silver flexible fabric covering the entire car. (Image courtesy of TopGear.com) In many ways the car looks exactly the same, but seems to be missing elements a standard car would have such as the lights. But this doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Punch Mug For Inter-Office Rumbles

Punch Mug For Inter-Office Rumbles
There is a common misconception about corporate interaction. It’s not always “all business”. Some of the most hardcore mofos I’ve ever known were members of the corporate elite. Want to make a snide comment about their quarterly profits? How about a punch to the jaw instead, fool?! And while corporate honchos might not walk around with big metal chains and sharpened shanks as their weapon of choice, they certainly find ways to hold their own in the inter-office rumbles. This Punch mug not only delivers the kick of caffeine you so desperately need, but also provides an excellent alternative to brass knuckles for any snotty PR employees. Voodoo Omen gets examined from the inside

Voodoo Omen gets examined from the inside
by Donald Melanson, posted Jun 11th 2008 at 3:14PM We’ve already seen plenty of official pics and videos of Voodoo’s pricey new Omen desktop, but if you’ve been hankering to know what’s going on under its shiny hood you can now get your fix courtesy of Pocket-lint, which has cracked one open and snapped a couple of pics. Not surprisingly, the Omen’s insides are decided more cluttered than its minimalist exterior, not to mention considerably more brightly colored. Hit up the link below for a closer look. Snow Leopard to drop PowerPC support?

Snow Leopard to drop PowerPC support?
by Joshua Topolsky, posted Jun 11th 2008 at 1:55PM PowerPC users, your days could be numbered. According to an alleged screenshot of Snow Leopard’s system requirements, only Intel CPUs will get to take a ride on the 10.6 train as of now. The grab comes from an early version of the OS seeded to developers at WWDC this week, though given that Jobsy said we’re a year out from an actual release, these things could change. First look: Human egg emerging from ovary

First look: Human egg emerging from ovary
Here’s something you’ve never seen before, guaranteed: an egg popping out of a human ovary. Except that, contrary to eggs-pert opinion, the egg’s exit is really more like oozing. Reproductive scientists have long thought that human eggs emerge explosively, but it turns out the process takes about 15 minutes. Several stunning photos, the clearest ever taken of the act of human ovulation, were captured accidentally during a hysterectomy. The one above, and others, appear in the June 14 issue of the Brit magazine New Scientist. They were shot by Jacques Donnez of the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. A most felicitous name. If my high-school French hasn’t failed me, “Donnez” means “Give.” Ta (Read the full post about ‘First look: Human egg emerging from ovary’…)

UK woman edges closer to becoming bionic woman

UK woman edges closer to becoming bionic woman
by Darren Murph, posted Jun 11th 2008 at 8:23AMEileen Brown doesn’t have any full-fledged robotic phalanges or anything, but she is slowly but surely becoming what most would consider a bionic woman. Mrs. Brown has been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis since her 20s, and now that she’s 49, countless operations have replaced every joint in her body with artificial alternatives save for her elbow and left hip — the latter of which is set to be swapped out before the month’s end. Currently, the determined dame lives with a lot of pain, but she refuses to let a few aches ruin her livelihood. In all honesty, the most amazing part of this isn’t the ability of metal (enough to set off an airport detector) to hold a person together, it’s the will to soldier on. The Boy Scouts need a few good open-source coders

In one of my former lives, I worked as a PC Technician at a Boy Scout office (and down the street at the Girl Scout office). It was a surprisingly difficult job because there is no centralized software that the organization uses. Each region office, section office, council office, and troop has to develop its own software to keep track of everything. I remember Microsoft Access databases that would make you cry.

They’ve finally wised up and realized that they can take advantage of an enormous resource. Their alumni.

360 is the New Extreme

360 is the New Extreme
You remember back in the nineties when everyone was tacking on “Extreme” as a descriptor for whatever it was they were doing? Whether it was something risky like mountain biking or something mundane like Mountain Dew, everything was “EXTREME!” I guess it was a response to the Extreme sports fad that is still going on, and will probably never die. The 360 is another extreme offering from a designer Francesco Sommacal. Instead of standing on the board like skateboarding or snowboarding, the user actually sticks his or her feet in the wheels itself, giving a whole new level of control. The wheels are thick and rugged, allowing the 360 to traverse areas that a skateboarder or inline skater can’t normally play in, like gravel and grass.
