Give the Canadian Parliament credit for at least attempting to drag its copyright laws into the 21st century. But one gets the feeling that a digital hornets’ nest has been stirred up by new legislation introduced by Industry Minister Jim Prentice. Canada’s government tried to find the right balance between personal freedom and protection of artists’ rights with its amendments to the Copyright Act. Yet judging from the coverage, critics will no doubt point to similarities to the U.S.’s Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which digital rights advocates accuse of favoring Big Media, Inc. I’ve written before about both my love of good (preferably large) watches and my nostalgia for cassette tapes, and here’s a design that brings them both together with a dash of style. It’s available for £35.00 (around $69) from Asos, who for some strange reason have it in the men’s section of their website… Hey Asos, girls can be geeks too, y’know! [Via Shiny Shiny]. HP revisited its Pavillion line and came out with guns blazing – now, the entire series boasts of HD tuners, Blu-ray drives, webcams, fingerprint readers and even built-in 3G internet. Aesthetically, the series also received a makeover with a smooth, liquid-metallic ‘magic chrome’ controls that light up upon touching. An optional BrightView Infinity Widescreen and color-matched keyboards and touchpads also contribute to the elegant design. But the real story is in the range of choices the Pavillion line offers. First, users can choose between AMD and Intel to power their notebooks. Then, it’s a matter of balancing price and power. From the lightweight dv4 ($800 for AMD or $1000 (Read the full post about ‘HP’s Pavillion Series notebooks come out better, brighter’…)

by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted Jun 12th 2008 at 3:47PM Just when we though Tegatech’s Gigabyte M528 MID would run a scary $1131, Gigabyte has come out and said that the unit will run a somewhat more palatable $750. That includes the hardware only, so the SIM and 3G data plans will be completely up to you. But, keep in mind this unit packs an 800Mhz Menlow processor, GPS, and 8GB SSD. As for when you can grab one, it’s looking like late July in Taiwan. (Read the full post about ‘Gigabyte M528 Atom-based MID gets $750 price and release timeframe’…)

So you say your just not ready to jump on the iphone bandwagon quite yet. Your Palm has been working just fine for you, but you wouldn’t mind giving it a little touch-up with an iPhone-like interface. by Donald Melanson, posted Jun 12th 2008 at 5:53PM G-Tec’s thought control hat has been out there making people look silly for some time now, but a group of researchers at Goldsmiths, University of London have now put it to a somewhat more unique (but equally silly-looking) use. As the BBC reports, they’ve effectively turned the device into a musical instrument, with the wearer only required to think about a note as they flash on a screen in order to play it. It’s apparently not quite a foolproof solution just yet, with it currently only able to play the correct note about six out of eight times, but the researchers see plenty of potential applications for the system, including helping composers struck down with multiple sclerosis or other physical disabilities. OK, so the title above might be lame to some, but I couldn’t resist. LG has rolled out a trio of new handsets for the masses - the Dare, the Chocolate and the Decoy. The Dare will feature a touch screen display (which phone doesn’t nowadays), 3G connectivity, V-Cast, VZ Navigator and a 3.2 megapixel camera. As for the Decoy, this will be the first cell phone in the world to feature an integrated Bluetooth headset inside, while the most recent Chocolate series phone is a slim flip style music handset that boasts 1GB of memory, a microSD memory card slot, a 2 megapixel camera, an integrated FM tuner, V-Cast Music library access, dual speakers, and Bluetooth connectivity.
