Robots to be our lovers by 2050, not just in Massachussetts

Robots to be our lovers by 2050, not just in Massachussetts
by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted Jun 22nd 2008 at 8:09PM Remember when you were a kid and you told your friends that you totally loved your new computer, and some little luddite looked at you and said, “So why don’t you marry it?” There was that brief moment when you thought your Commodore 64 could, in fact, make a nice spouse. If not, move along. If so, David Levy told participants at a conference last week that we would all be having loving relationships with robots by 2050, not just trysts in Massachussetts. He predicts that we’ll have robots as sex toys within five years and true, deep relationships later on. Some robots already kiss, some seem to hate, but Levy says we’ll have emotional relationships based on conversation by mid-century. Openmoko FreeRunner looking good for early July release

Openmoko FreeRunner looking good for early July release
by Chris Ziegler, posted Jun 22nd 2008 at 6:41PM Unless you’re very, very special, you haven’t yet had an opportunity to run your hands over Openmoko’s latest open-source creation, the FreeRunner, which was announced several months back with the hope of a spring release. Unlike the Neo1973 before it, the FreeRunner’s said to be chock full of enough spit and polish to take on an audience larger than the original’s hardcore developer base, and while a springtime date with destiny is now out of reach, it looks like they’ll only miss the mark by a few days. Sprint’s July 13 Palm Treo 800w launch confirmed

Sprint’s July 13 Palm Treo 800w launch confirmed
It looks like the rumors that have been surrounding the upcoming release of the Palm Treo 800w for Sprint will indeed come true. As we previously reported, the launch date was rumored to be July 13, and it looks like that has since been confirmed. Of course, July 13 is when the regular, or non-enterprise customers will be able to get their hands on one. The Treo 800w will first be available beginning July 9 for enterprise customers. The Treo 800w will set users back $599.99 if you choose to go in without a contract, or a much more reasonable $249.99 along with a two-year agreement. In addition to the Treo 800w it looks like Sprint customers can expect the red blackberry Curve to land at the same time, and the LG Rumor in blue to follow later in the month of July. Montreal’s Public Bike System uses RFID, solar power, and tons of social trust

Montreal’s Public Bike System uses RFID, solar power, and tons of social trust
by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted Jun 22nd 2008 at 4:20PM There are all sorts of ways to deal with rising gas prices and public transportation needs, and Montreal is getting in the game with what they’re calling the Public Bike System. Utilizing a central inventory and check-out website, solar-powered docking stations, and high-tech RFID-tagged aluminum bikes, the system is a gadget-maxed project that could be amazing or turn into a complete theft disaster. Each station holds six bikes and six docks, and users can find the nearest available bike on a website and then return the bike to any other dock. Payments can be made via credit, debit, or “member” card. Quick question, though — what if a popu (Read the full post about ‘Montreal’s Public Bike System uses RFID, solar power, and tons of social trust’…)

FineDigital showcases voice-recognizing FineDrive X700 GPS

FineDigital showcases voice-recognizing FineDrive X700 GPS
by Darren Murph, posted Jun 22nd 2008 at 3:16PM It’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen anything fresh from FineDigital, but the firm has just introduced the slim and seductive FineDrive X700 over in South Korea. Humorously, the company is asserting that this particular unit is the first of its kind to offer voice recognition, but even a light amount of research would help it understand such a statement is far from being true. Dell issues last minute extension of XP sales

Dell issues last minute extension of XP sales

As an option to its customers, Dell will be offering downgrade option from Vista to Windows XP provided that customers’ pay a $50 fee. However, Dell has since issued a announcement informing its customers that they are extending the sale of Dell computers with Windows XP until June 26 due to “popular demand.” The option will be available with some of Dell’s models including the XPS 630, 720, H2C and M1730. So if you’re planning to get one of these systems, you have a couple of days more to do so. (Read the full post about ‘Dell issues last minute extension of XP sales’…)

Sidekick LX Video Playback

So everyone has seen the video recording capabilities of the Sidekick LX, but what about video playback? We converted a video into .3gp and tossed it on the Sidekick to see how it looked. Surprisingly it turned out pretty good! It’s not unreasonable to think that people could be watching TV shows and music videos on their Sidekick. We won’t say movies are a possibility because we haven’t done any testing to see just how much of an impact this has on battery life.

The Tristar Massage Chair would be great for Sundays

The Tristar Massage Chair would be great for Sundays
The weekend is almost over, I know, I’m sorry to remind you.  However, you’ll need to do whatever possible to relax today to make it through the week to come.  You know the silly little chair pad that you can slap on your desk chair or put on your car seat for long drives?  It’s nifty because you get a nice cheap massage and none of the troubles of having to go to a masseuse.  First of all with a masseuse you have to pay for them, which is just ludicrous.  Then you have the awkward factor of what type of person do you want to be alone in a room with, while they rub on you.  Granted it feels great, but some people do have an issue with that.
