Blackberry Bold release date delayed?

Blackberry Bold release date delayed?
by Joshua Topolsky, posted Jun 25th 2008 at 11:05AM According to reports crossing the wires this morning, Research In Motion is expected to delay the release of its next-gen blackberry Bold. The Boy Genius is claiming that software issues, battery life problems, and overheating are causing the hold-up, which will move the street date back to mid-August as opposed to the presumed July release on AT&T. There’s been no confirmation from RIM on the news, but that’s not stopping analysts from predicting the move will lower the company’s second quarter earnings outlook. Samsung intros the snoozefest J800 Luxe and L700 cellphones

Samsung intros the snoozefest J800 Luxe and L700 cellphones
by Joshua Topolsky, posted Jun 25th 2008 at 10:25AM It looks like the folks at Samsung are keeping the fires burning with a batch of new handsets announced at the Singapore Telecommunications Exhibition. First on the block is the 3G, J800 Luxe slider, a mid-range phone with a 2.2-inch 176 x 200 display, two megapixel camera, FM tuner, A2DP support, and a slot for microSD cards. The electronics-maker is also offering the L700, a fairly unexciting candybar with a 2.1-inch screen, HSDPA, a choice of colors (pink, silver, and gold), and pretty much all the other features listed for the previous phone. The most interesting offering from this set is the Symbian-based L870 that we’ve seen previously, which the company claims is still on target for its August release. Windows XP to be supported until 2014 says Microsoft

If you are worried that Windows XP support will start to take a nosedive after the June 30th date when XP will only be available on new select laptops and PCs only, Microsoft has some reassuring words for you. “Yes, you will continue to be supported.” Microsoft has announced plans to keep XP owners happy and supported for almost another 6 years.

According to a letter released from Bill Veghte, Microsoft Microsoft Senior VP, Windows XP will continue to be supported and will include “security updates” and “other critical updates” until April of 2014.

Veghte also assures that for those not ready to upgrade to Windows Vista, can still get XP even after June 30th, when Microsoft will no longer sell Windows XP directly to major PC manufacturers.

Toshiba’s laptops with cell-derived chips

Toshiba’s laptops with cell-derived chips
Toshiba’s laptops with cell-derived chipsJun 25, 2008 Toshiba will present its Qosmio G50 and F40 laptops that feature the chip SpursEngine SE1000, which has four of the ‘Synergistic Processing Elements’ from the Cell Broadband Engine processor, in July in Japan. The playstation 3 runs the Cell chip that has eight of the SPE cores and a Power PC main processor. These SPE cores implement the heavy number-crunching, but we get an outstanding result - the console’s graphics are excellent. The laptops’ chip will perform its functions in the same way. The gadgets’ operating systems will run on an Intel Core 2 Duo chip, but the SpursEngine will be used to execute processor-intensive tasks, for example, processing of high-definition video. No Gmail in Germany as Google loses 3-year fight

Users of Google’s e-mail service in Germany will not be able to use gmail in their addresses after Google has lost a trademark fight with a company using the name G-mail.

G-mail is another e-mail service run by the businessman Daniel Giersch, but he charges people for the privilege of using his service. A ruling against Google in the court case that started back in 2005 was made last July and since then Google has made no effort to use the Gmail name.

MPAA argues against providing proof in piracy lawsuits

There is currently an active court case being heard regarding the piracy of music by Jammie Thomas, with the music company involved being Capitol Records. The lawsuit is based on the fact that Jammie allegedly made 24 music tracks available to download by storing them in a shared folder.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which is handling the case for Capitol, is demanding US$150,000 in damages per song. Jammie has already received a US$220,000 fine for copyright infringement just for storing the files in a shared folder.

Fortunately for Jammie, the judge has decided he made a mistake ruling that just putting files in a shared folder was enough to prove piracy and is now asking for further information.

Ascom Wireless releases new i75 Messenger

Ascom Wireless releases new i75 Messenger
Ascom Wireless Solutions has just increased their WiFi portfolio by unveiling a new handset known as the i75 Messenger. This could not come in a more timely manner as the use of WiFi is growing at an unprecedented rate, in part due to freeing us from the shackles of a wired environment, which is always a plus point in my book (provided the drawbacks aren’t too impractical to deal with, of course). What does the i75 offer on paper? Well, for starters, it “combines advanced messaging and highly versatile telephony as well as push to talk capabilities. World of Warcraft was originally a free-to-play, ad-supported MMO

The Game Developer Conference is in Paris this week and one of the KeyNote Q&A sessions yesterday was with Rob Parlo, senior vice president of Blizzard. Among finding out details such as his background including a degree in Criminology, one very surprising fact came out about the origins of World of Warcraft..

During the session Rob said the following:

When we were first going to make World of Warcraft, we wanted to make it free and advertising supported … We didn’t want to charge a subscription, but as we researched market conditions, we realized that wouldn’t support us.

He also commented on how they approached the MMO game space saying they first targeted Ultima then Everquest before deciding to go their own route.

Set of Recycled LP Record Coasters

Set of Recycled LP Record Coasters
If you have a thing for vintage technology, these coasters are a great way to show your love for old LP records.  Granted you could just pick up your own favorite records from the local thrift shop, that is if you don’t have your own already.  However, having a cold drink, dripping with condensation will end up damaging the label on the top.  These particular records have been laminated on both sides to prevent that from happening.  Now if you happen to find a way to do the laminating yourself, it’d definitely be more fun to just pick out your own LP records.
