July 4, 2008 isn’t just our nation’s 232nd b-day — it’s also the day the highly anticipated Openmoko Neo FreeRunner cellphone will be available to anyone who wants to take a gander at the latest attempt to take the open Linux platform mainstream. Will it work? If you gently take your eyes to a few discussion forums around the FOSS community, you’ll witness overall controlled excitement — after all, they get to play with some real hardware that’s designed just for them (and will keep them from thinking about Google’s open Android OS for a few days -– BTW, where is that first build already? Jeez). But we can understand the anticipation for the FreeRunner — the openness of the unit really beckons. (Read the full post about ‘Openmoko Neo FreeRunner on Sale July 4′…)

Vudu first began showing up in Best Buy locations back in late-March and at the time it was just 24 locations, all of which were located in California. The limited availability was thought to be a testing period to make sure the devices would be able to sell as expected. Well, jump forward a little over a month and it looks like it must have been successful because Vudu and Best Buy have just announced a little more widespread availability, however it is still not nationwide. They have remained in California, but also expanded to Arizona and Illinois, all in all it looks like they are now available in almost 70 Best Buy locations. Linspire, the company that first made news because of a lawsuit Microsoft started over its Linux operating system named Lindows, has been acquired by a competitor. Earlier this week, Linspire announced that it had been acquired by Xandros, which offers OEM Linux solutions, Linux desktop and server products, and cross-platform Windows-Linux management tools. At this time Freespire, the open source project sponsored by Linspire, will survive post-acquisition.
It seems Xandros was very interested in acquiring Linspire’s CNR software distribution facility. Linspire’s model allows for one-click software delivery for updates and access to content and applications.

by Chris Ziegler, posted Jul 3rd 2008 at 1:52PM July 4 was the date, but hey, what’s the harm in opening up the floodgates just a handful of hours early? (Read the full post about ‘OpenMoko says “screw it,” starts taking FreeRunner orders a day early’…)

What do you have on your home or business hard drive right now? If you have a home hard drive it probably has financial records, documents and irreplaceable digital photos and videos. If it’s a business hard drive then it not only has financial documents including accounts payable, but customer records as well. Now just imagine finding out all of that information is gone. It can easily happen due to natural or man-made disasters. That is why SentrySafe, the company known for making fire-proof and water-proof safes, have turned their technology toward protecting computer hard drives. Back in January, the company released a 160 GB version of their FIRE-SAFE/Waterproof Hard Drive. (Read the full post about ‘SentrySafe launch 250 GB fire-safe, water-proof hard drive’…)

Casio has just developed the Blanview LCD transmissive panel which does not require the help of backlight when used outdoors, making it a great development for cell phones and portable media players that will be released in the near future. Casio managed to increase the panel’s transmittance by approximately 30%, while reducing power consumption for outdoor use by about 50% when compared with its existing model. Not only that, it this new structure is able to take outside light straight into the LCD panel itself, hence doing away with the need for backlighting. Samples will be shipped beginning from this month onwards in 2.7″, 3.5″, 5.7″ and 6.5″ models. (Read the full post about ‘Casio Blanview LCD Display’…)

The blackberry Pearl has just received support for Google Maps with voice search, and the “afflicted” models are the BlackBerry 8110, 8120 and 8130 (US Only). The search function can be downloaded here when accessed by your BlackBerry, and after installation you can speak your search simply by pressing the left-side key. Once you’re done mentioning the location of your choice, Google Maps for mobile devices will automatically get to its task and throwing out the most relevant locations. Interesting and definitely a novelty - I wonder just how wide its usage will be like. (Read the full post about ‘Google Maps with Voice Search’…)

Internet users usually hit a brick wall when trying to search for content that is embedded in Adobe Flash media. Content of this type, whether in SWF or the more common FLV format, are never really available for web-crawling search engines to access. Well, not anymore. Adobe is teaming up with search giants Google and Yahoo start indexing Flash content and run the Adobe Flash Player on their servers at runtime. Initially, this will mean not only the ability to search Flash content but better search returns for your queries. The jury is still out whether this move will have huge or limited impact, initial signs bode well, especially when one realizes that there is a wealth of training, e-learning, and marketing content all on the Flash medium. Sometimes Sci-Fi themed speakers can come off overly cheesy. Usually due to too many details on very cheap materials. This new USB speaker is fairly simple in looks and manages to just look cool without being over the top. Somehow, Brando has managed to come out with a lighted speaker without it looking like it should be paired with a blacklight or lava lamp. Although it still looks overly fitting for a geeky room, it still is not what I’d call tacky. (Read the full post about ‘The USB LED Light Tube Speaker’…)
