The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that AOL and Microsoft executives were in discussions about a possible merger. PC World reported the news and went on to discuss how such a merger would affect the pending battle for control of Yahoo!. Carl Icahn and Microsoft have been working together on a possible deal that could include the selling of Yahoo!’s search business to Microsoft.
There’s also a possibility that Microsoft could purchase all of Yahoo!, but ultimately the fate of Yahoo! is tied to a proxy vote to be held at the company’s annual shareholder meeting on August 1st.

Although Brando doesn’t make even the slightest hint that they were intending to make a Mario Bros reference with these little desk cleaners, the mushrooms still have a great deal of appeal to those loving the classic game. If your cubicle has been looking overly dusty lately, these can suck up dust, hair, and even cigarette ashes. They do mention that one for your car, but we all know the one time you’d really love to have a cigarette is right in the middle of your office when your boss is driving you nuts. Almost all I’ve heard and read about since the launch of a certain new, improved iPhone last week is applications - the popularity of the new apps store, the best free apps… it’s been, quite frankly, apps up to my ass. But I’m not easily impressed. There’s only so long I can be enthralled by Tetris or Scrabble on my phone (and that’s quite a long time, but we all get bored eventually). What I’m really interested in knowing about are honest-to-goodness useful applications that could actually make my life easier (my imaginary life, where I own an iphone 3G, that is). And Jott is one of the few apps to actually get me interested. Tags: hdtv, robots, mobile phone, technology (Read the full post about ‘Jott can turn your iPhone into a text recorder/transcriber’…)

Today Series3 and HD owners should start seeing a nice addition to the content available on their TiVo. TiVo’s summer upgrade (9.4) brings along the ability to watch YouTube video on your TV, which means your video collection just increased by a few hundred million.
TiVo has all the information on their site, but the important thing is that it is finally here. This is something that people have been expecting from TiVo for some time so while it’s not necessarily a game-changer, the diversity and quantity of content that this makes available is considerable.

Back in April, 18 year-old Owen Thor Walker a.k.a AKill pleaded guilty to 6 charges of cybercrime in a New Zealand court. His crimes as part of a ring of hackers apparently cost the local economy around US$20.4 million.
This week the court case came to an end with Owen managing to dodge a conviction. Instead he will have to pay US$11,000 in costs and damages (even though he reportedly earned US$32,000 during his crime spree). He will also work with the local police to help crack down on online criminal activity.
The reason for the lack of a conviction is because Owen only got paid to write the software that went on to illegally earn other people money.

The Psystar vs Apple cage-fight continues, and Apple now wants the Mac clone maker to recall all the OS X equipped PCs it has sold – something that will likely come as a relief to Psystar’s disappointed customers (unless, of course, they have a pile of leaves that needs blowing). That Psystar has violated the OS X End User Licensing Agreement is obvious, but these things have never really had a good hard test in court. So Apple is going after copyright issues, saying that Psystar modified its OS X Leopard code to run on standard PC hardware, and then effectively distributed that code on the hacked computers. Add to this that Psystar’s business model requires that it makes similar modifications to all OS updates, and you see the tangle it is in. Sony today unveiled the VAIO FW notebook—a multimedia PC that displays HD movies the way they were meant to be seen. Part of a series, the VAIO FW notebook comes in multiple configurations, including a premium and a standard model. It can also record, store and play back personal content on high-capacity BD media. Weighing a little over six pounds, the Sony FW notebook features the world’s first 16.4-inch display, which combines the benefits of a slightly larger17-inch widescreen with the smaller “footprint” of a 15.4-inch model.
