by Joshua Topolsky, posted Jul 29th 2008 at 2:08PM Toshiba — clearly feeling the heat from other fashionable external hard drive makers — has introduced a new line of disks guaranteed to bring on a neon flashback from your disco days (or Eurotrash nightmares). The three new models come decked out in the 160GB “Gecko Green,” 250GB “Hot Rod Red,” and 320GB “Carbon Grey” variations, with USB 2.0 ports and 8MB buffers on-board. Enough people laughed at the Microsoft Surface: "One day your computer will be a big ass table." But the company is pushing forward its vision of a touch-screen world with the Microsoft Sphere. Unveiled this week in Redmond, the Sphere is, well, essentially a sphere-shaped version of the Surface, using the same multi-touch sensors and software. The Sphere is slightly more sophisticated: It has to use a special algorithm to project round images; therefore, it has its own special applications, such as a globe (gasp) and a really fancy version of Pong, as demonstrated in the video. Microsoft Research has no official plans to make the Sphere commercially available. (Read the full post about ‘Microsoft Shows Off Sphere Surface’…)

Yet another Sony Ericsson handset being leaked prior to an official announcement. The latest is the G705, a seemingly decent mid-range slider style handset. The G705 is expected to feature a 2.4-inch display, a 3.2-megapixel camera with flash, built-in GPS, 128MB of internal memory with a memory card slot for extra storage and running the A2 software platform. Sadly it seems that Sony Ericsson has decided to not include two important items, auto-focus for the camera, or a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Although nothing official has been announced, the rumor is calling for Sony Ericsson to officially unveil the G705 during an upcoming press event that is scheduled to take place in about two weeks. Ok, the phrase “official leak” doesn’t sound quite right, but that’s the case with the Nokia. While it isn’t available on an official basis yet, Nokia has already posted specifications of this smartphone on their own website. This mid-range N Series cell phone will come with GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, Wi-Fi and HSDPA connectivity, ensuring you remain hooked to the Internet no matter where you are. There is no word on GPS navigation, but that would be nice to see in the final product. It will also support a wide range of all the popular video formats, making this one multimedia-centric device. The good people at Rogers Wireless has decided to take their chances with Apple’s offer of $150 million worth of iPhones, which makes it sound as though you won’t find an iPhone 3G shortage in the Great White North anytime soon. While Rogers Wireless won’t be making as much profit as they’d like to each time they sell an iPhone 3G, it is hoped that the magical handset will snag a higher average revenue per user to counter the initial subsidy investment. Just how many iPhone 3Gs does $150 million translate to? Taking an average non-subsidzed price of $450 per handset into consideration, that would amount to a mountain of 333,000 iphone 3Gs. Peepholes are all very well, but you actually have to leave your chair to find out who’s calling, and that’s never good. Thankfully, there’s now a more high-tech option for the sedentary (or peephole-lacking) among us. The Secure Sight records all your visitors, whether you’re in or out, so you can see who’s calling right now as well as who came by when you were at the market. (Better than TV!) You fit the camera to your door and put the viewer wherever is convenient. Personally, I’d also put a sign up to let people know they’re on candid camera, so you don’t get any pesky accusations of eroding civil liberties… and also I’d consider upgrading to 4GB with an SD card. The socially awkward have a new tool at their disposal: a service called Slydial (available only in the US) allows you to call someone’s voicemail, bypassing any chance of ever having to speak to a real person. The possibilities are endless: that old friend who keeps calling, but you can’t stand to speak to? Give her a Slydial. The boss who scares you but asked you to ring him with some info? No problem! And that relationship that wasn’t going anywhere but neither of you dared to admit it? Well, it’s cruel, but Slydial comes in handy there, too. Just don’t forget that all those people can also use Slydial to clog up your voicemail with their abuse… Via Shiny Shiny. I remember the Japanese Pokeman characters from an addictive cartoon show which featured the just-too-cute-for-words yellow Pikachu, but as my daughter became older, he lived primarily on her DS. She should have entered the Pokeman Video Game showdown; she’s been playing it long enough. Over the past two weeks, more than 1,000 Pokemon fans swarmed Los Angeles and New York, for the chance to become the ultimate Pokemon Video Game Champion. From as young as 6 to 43, contestants vied across the nation for their title, with the decision to be made in Florida. Competing on Pokemon Diamond or Pokemon Pearls Nintendo DS ( who wouldn’t want one of those?), the Japanese finalists will take on the American winners August 16th at Orlando’s Disney World.
